Strategic Purpose Statement
The programme is aimed at degree graduates, both domestic and international, who wish to establish a career as a communication professional and actively engage and learn in a flexible and authentic environment. It is also suitable for industry professionals seeking a qualification and additional skills for practice in existing roles or for career advancement, and adult learners returning to study for a career change.
The programme has a mix of taught classes, projects and self-directed learning in a range of communication, marketing, media and screen production contexts.
Graduate profile
The Graduate Diploma in Communication is based on the Bachelor of Communication which is for communication 'storytellers'; those driven to tell stories, to inspire or share truths. They traverse all media to connect and bridge the gap between you and me. They are open minded, passionate and determined.
This programme is for people who are 'establishing a career' and wish to actively engage and learn in a flexible and authentic environment. The target learners are people who are locally and globally aware and technologically literate who have been introduced to communication through contributory pathways, or professional experiences. They are degree graduates, both domestic and international, industry professionals or adult learners who want to both progress through a formal qualification to achieve career aspirations, and be inspired to engage in a creative life that contributes to culture and sustainability for the region, nationally and globally.
Graduates of this programme will be capable, confident and competent practitioners of the communication discipline and will have developed transferable skills to be able to work across alternative disciplines that may emerge as part of the dynamic and shifting media and communications environment.
Graduates of this programme will be future thinkers and makers who respond with solutions that are user centred. Graduates of this programme can apply critical and reflective methodologies, and the collaborative and independent approaches they have acquired to engage in either employment opportunities or postgraduate level study.

Graduates of this programme will be qualified to work in a range of communication related roles with specialisation in areas of marketing communication, content creation, public relations, screen production and media communication.

Entry Requirements
a)Candidates are required to have:
i. Successfully completed a bachelor's degree from a New Zealand institution or
ii. Successfully completed a bachelor's degree from an approved and accredited overseas institution; or
iii. Successfully completed a level 6 or 7 diploma and relevant work and/or life experience (equivalent to a bachelor's degree) or
iv. Equivalent (as approved by the Centre Director or authorised nominee)

Content
The programme is structured around a 30credit core module (Communication Craft) which provides for a mix of communication content from the Bachelor of Communication, including; creative media, multi-media journalism, public relations and marketing communication, digital marketing and screen production.
An additional 30 credits will be selected from an approved list of electives in professional, theory, research, project and practical modules. These, along with 60 credits of free choice electives, provide flexibility for learners to customise their programme of study to gain skills most relevant to their intended career outcome.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
