Strategic Purpose Statement |
The Bachelor of Applied Science (endorsed) (BAppSci) is designed to provide a practically oriented, progressive academic degree that responds to industry needs and produces work-ready technologists for employment in a diversity of technology areas within the broad disciplines of Biotechnology, Environmental Technology, and Food Technology.
The BAppSci is a level 7 qualification, consisting of 360 credits, that ākonga can complete within six semesters. The programme consists of a common core where ākonga from all endorsements complete core modules that provide a foundation for applied science. Ākonga then go on to complete the compulsory modules associated with their endorsements and a number of elective modules. The BAppSci is an 'endorsed' degree with ākonga able to select up to two Endorsements offered from three options: Biotechnology, Environmental Technology, and Food Technology. |

Graduate profile |
At the end of their programme, all BAppSci graduates will be able to:
Select and apply scientific principles to critically analyse and solve complex problems relating to specialised technological disciplines. Design and conduct investigations and experiments, using appropriate research methods and analytical tools to synthesise solutions to complex technological problems. Select and apply appropriate quality tools and software to solve problems and optimise processes in technological systems. Apply standard business protocols and professional communication and collaboration skills to manage projects in a technology driven workplace. Apply knowledge of professional, legal, and ethical requirements in providing technological solutions, including an awareness of social, economic and cultural drivers and impacts (including relevant Māori perspectives). Apply indepth specialised knowledge to analyse, transform, and evaluate abstract concepts and data, in order to formulate and manage activities for achieving and evaluating stakeholder defined outcomes. Biotechnology Endorsement In addition, BAppSci (Biotechnology) graduates will also be able to: Apply generic and specialised science and technology skills (including operating instruments for sample analysis), and insights into biomolecular structure, properties, and metabolism to demonstrate technical solutions in specific biotechnology industrial settings. Demonstrate how microbial and genetic technologies are applied in industrial settings and evaluate their social, economic, environmental, and health impacts. Environmental Technology Endorsement In addition, BAppSci (Environmental Technology) graduates will be able to: Apply generic and specialised science and technology skills (including field sampling and analysis), and insights into biodiversity, ecological principles, and regulatory frameworks to drive practical environmental solutions. Apply broad environmental expertise (including biosecurity and exclusion technologies) to prevent organism incursions and develop management and sustainability strategies to mitigate the impacts of human technologies. Food Technology Endorsement In addition, BAppSci (Food Technology) graduates will be able to: Apply generic and specialised science and technology skills (including sensory, microbiological, and chemical analyses) to investigate food components and explain their functions, manufacturing uses, properties and nutritional significance. Utilise advanced food engineering and technology expertise (including project management and emerging technologies) to plan and design secondary processing systems, and address key processing factors including product quality, cost, sanitation, and environmental impacts. |

Entry Requirements |
Candidates are required to have obtained:
NCEA Level 3 comprised of 60 credits at NCEA Level 3 or above and 20 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above, including: 14 credits each at NCEA Level 3 in Biology, Chemistry and a third approved subject, preferably English; and a minimum of 20 credits at NCEA Level 2 in Mathematics; and Literacy (10 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above made up of 5 credits each in reading and writing); and Numeracy (10 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above); or 80 credits at NCEA Level 2, including: a minimum of 20 credits each in Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics and one other approved subject, preferably English; and Literacy (10 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above made up of 5 credits each in reading and writing); and Numeracy (10 credits at NCEA Level 1 or above); or a relevant qualification at Level 3 on the NZQCF or above; or equivalent. |
