Strategic Purpose Statement
Graduates of the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (level 6) with Strands in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical disciplines, will have attained skills of competent engineering technicians. They will be able to apply engineering theory to practice, competently perform technical operations to the standards, ethical and professional responsibilities required by the engineering profession; be confident, critical thinkers with ability to solve problems within a broad engineering setting, have knowledge to permit informed, rational decision making in their specialist field of engineering (Civil, Electrical or Mechanical) and to implement these decisions; work collaboratively with construction workers, clients, authorities, agencies; industry and other professionals to provide a comprehensive engineering service in their relevant specialist area; have an understanding of all cultures and an awareness and clear understanding of tangata whenua and implications of the Treaty of Waitangi and the Resource Management Act. Graduates will have attained educational underpinnings and work-ready attributes defined in the IPENZ Graduate Profile for Engineering Technicians and will be able to be employed in a relevant engineering environment to work towards the achievement of the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering Practice (NZDEP). Once Graduates have met the IPENZ competence standard for independent practice (NZDEP), as an engineering technician, they are accepted for Associate Membership (AIPENZ) and Certified Engineering Technician (CertETn) registration without further assessment. Graduates may also choose higher education at degree level such as the Bachelor of Engineering Technology.
Entry Requirements
Minimum of 48 NCEA credits L2 4 subjects including 12 credits maths or equivalent qualification. ie International Baccalaureate/Cambridge or equivalent credits trades training &/or skills/experience. Minimum 8 literacy Credits L1 including 4 reading & 4 writing. Internationals IELTS Score of 6.0 with a minimum score of 5.5 in the written band.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
