NCEA and business

As an employer, you need to understand the secondary school qualifications system in New Zealand, so that you understand the information that school leavers and other job applicants present. The National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) is New Zealand's main secondary qualification.

The Record of Achievement (ROA) provides a clear picture of what a prospective employee knows and can do, making matching skills to jobs easier.

Quality assurance

NCEA is registered on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF). This means NZQA is satisfied that it meets certain standards for robustness of assessment processes, consistency of standards, rigour of reviews, and relevance to the needs of all sectors of New Zealand society.

As a consequence, employers can be assured it is quality assured, and that when someone presents an NCEA as their qualification, it has integrity, meaning and value.

Record of Achievement

Any prospective employee that has sat NCEA and gained credits on the NZQF has a Record of Achievement (ROA). This lists all of their achievements to date.

The ROA is a valuable tool for evaluating prospective employees for a job, because it is comprehensive and detailed, and shows what students can do.

Staff will add to their ROA as they complete other training, such as on-the-job training provided by the company (where this training is part of the New Zealand Qualifications Framework), training offered by an Industry Training Organisation (ITO), or tertiary studies at Polytechnic or with private providers.
