Qualification Title NATIONAL CERTIFICATE in Electronic Security (Level 3)
Qualification Type National Certificate
Level 3
Credits 114
Subject Area
  • Society and Culture
  • Engineering and Technology » Electronics Technology » Electronic Security
Strategic Purpose Statement
This is the basic qualification for people wishing to pursue a career in the electronic security industry. It has been specifically designed to train installers of electronic security systems.

Typically, this qualification may be gained during the course of a two to three year traineeship, incorporating learning in the workplace and on courses conducted by accredited training providers. The trainee completes the prerequisite National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Level 2), which is the common introductory qualification for a variety of electrical and electronic occupations, and then the National Certificate in Electronic Security (Level 3). Some training providers may integrate learning for the two certificates into a common programme.

To gain the qualification, candidates must demonstrate knowledge and competence in the following areas:

Electrical theory, regulations, and practical skills required to prepare for registration as an Electrical Service Technician - B (EST-B). This is acquired by attending courses conducted by accredited training providers. Following a suitable period of work experience, trainees may then apply to the Electrical Workers Registration Board for EST-B registration, which is essential to permit them to work on mains operated equipment and connect to fixed power outlets.
Legislation, standards, codes of practice, theory, and procedures applicable to the installation of electronic security systems.
The practical skills of installing and testing intruder alarm systems, and any two of the following:
Security closed circuit television (CCTV) systems,
access control systems,
security intercom systems,
fire alarm systems.
Basic customer service skills related to installation at customer premises.
The ability to write simple reports.

The practical installation and customer service skills will pricipally be assessed by registered workplace assessors. The other skills will usually be assessed during off-job training courses.

Holders of this certificate may progress to the proposed National Certificate in Electronic Security (Level 4), which is for technicians capable of system design, commissioning, and maintenance of more complex security systems, and supervision in the electronic security industry. It will become available during 1998.

This certificate will also be of relevance to qualified electricians intending to work in the security installations field.
