Strategic Purpose Statement |
This qualification is for people who wish to machine shear crossbred sheep at a sustained output under variable conditions in the New Zealand wool harvesting industry.
All standards in this qualification are compulsory because shearing contains a set of well-defined skills and knowledge that apply across all woolsheds. Holders of this qualification are able to shear above average tallies per day, with an economy of effort and blow use, and with precise timing of foot, hand and eye movements as well as positioning of sheep. The qualification also recognises the knowledge and skills required to shear, tailor comb selection to sheep condition; diagnose and correct the most common faults in machinery and handpieces; and undertake gear experting. Candidates must already have completed the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool) (Level 3) [Ref: 1051] prior to award of this qualification. People must have completed the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Entry) (Level 2) with the Learner Strand [Ref: 1546] and the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Junior Shearer) (Level 2) [Ref: 1547] prior to award of the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Machine Shearing Crossbred Wool) (Level 3) [Ref: 1051]. The aim of the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Entry) (Level 2) with Strands [Ref: 1546], and National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Junior Shearer) (Level 2) [Ref: 1547] is to provide candidates with broad transferable skills such as occupational health and safety, work and study skills, and general agriculture, in addition to introductory wool harvesting skills. This qualification also has a relationship with the National Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Machine Shearing Fine Wool) (Level 4) [Ref: 1055] as candidates who are completing this qualification are also required to diagnose and correct the most common faults in machinery and handpieces; and undertake gear experting. This qualification is part of a series developed for the wool harvesting sector. A qualification pathways diagram can be found at the end of this document. The Agriculture Industry Training Organisation supports the concepts of continuing and lifelong education, and encourages people to consider future options on completion of this qualification, including other qualifications in Agriculture or other industries. |
