Strategic Purpose Statement
The National Certificate in Equine (Breeding) (Level 4) [Ref: 1070] is designed for people who are seeking to specialise in senior positions in areas of the breeding operation such as yearling preparation, broodmare care and preparation for breeding, and foaling.

People who have completed this qualification will have the skills to care for paddocked and stabled horses, groom a horse, clean stables, analyse horse feed, recognise health and ill health in horses, evaluate horse's conformation and action, know how to deal with an emergency situation involving horses, prepare a mare for serving and hold for service, tease a mare, care for a sick foal, assist to foal a mare, and prepare yearling for sales and attend sales. Qualification holders will have knowledge of horse's body systems and associated problems, fostering and care of an orphan foal, industry computer technology in the racing industry, skeletal and muscular development in the horse, basic dressing of a horse's feet, and the nature of horses. They will also have the skills to recognise and deal with sexual harassment, and protect health and safety in the workplace.

Elective 1 is designed to recognise variations between equine establishments, and equine industry sector requirements and includes a range of skills including agricultural vehicle driving or riding; and specialist equine skills and knowledge. People can select standards which are relevant to their workplace or their own personal development.

Elective 2 is specific to breeding and evaluation of a horse's potential and people can select from either thoroughbreds or standardbreds.

This qualification builds on, and has a relationship with, the National Certificate in Equine (Breeding) (Level 3) [Ref: 1542] as all the standards included in that qualification are also included in this qualification.

Completion of this qualification can lead to the Breeding Strand of the National Certificate in Equine (Stable Management) with strands in Harness Racing, Thoroughbred Racing, and Breeding [Ref: 1541].
