Strategic Purpose Statement |
The National Certificate in Service Sector (Level 3) with strands in Beauty Services; Hospitality; Recreation, Sport, and Fitness; Retail; and Tourism [Ref: 1513] is designed to provide people with an entry-level qualification which provides a pathway to employment in the wider tourism industry.
This entry-level qualification is unique as it was jointly developed by Hospitality Standards Institute; NZ Hairdressing Industry Training Organisation Inc; Retail Institute; Skills Active Aotearoa Limited; and Aviation, Tourism and Travel Training Organisation and can lead on to a number of qualifications provided by each of these industry training organisations. The compulsory section allows people awarded with this qualification to demonstrate both an understanding of New Zealand as a tourist destination and specific knowledge of tourist destinations in various regions of New Zealand, as well as the requirements of workplace health and safety. In addition, candidates are able to demonstrate customer service, product knowledge, and communication skills. The core elective sets allow candidates to demonstrate practices that support environmental sustainability, the use of Maori within a tourism context, and concepts to maintaining a safe and secure visitor environment. The three core elective sets provide the flexibility to complete the qualification's requirements in a specific context within the wider tourism sector. The qualification strands offer candidates the opportunity to demonstrate competency in a more detailed range of skills that relate to a specific sector of New Zealand's wider tourism industry. Each strand requires the candidate to complete a significant amount of work relevant to the specialist area covered by that strand. The specified classifications are unique to each strand and reflect the different pathways through the qualification. This qualification can be studied in a pre-employment environment; however, it also provides an excellent training platform for new entrants to each industry to complete in their workplace. |
