Strategic Purpose Statement
The National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Mining Administration Surface Extraction) (Level 5) is designed for A Grade Opencast Coal Mine Managers and A Grade Quarry Managers as part of the requirements for their statutory status.

Holders of this certificate are able to demonstrate knowledge and skills related to inspecting and reporting on extractive sites and operations, reviewing and implementing plans for extractives operations, planning storage of processed product, designing and maintaining stockpiles, selecting plant for excavation and transportation, rehabilitation planning; selecting crushing and screening plant, and geological features and their effects on an extraction site and the extraction methods.

People who have completed this qualification and the National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Mining Administration Surface Extraction B Grade) (Level 5) [Ref: 1536] will have been awarded all the standards required for the Certificate of Competence as an A Grade Opencast Coal Mine Manager, and the Certificate of Competence as an A Grade Quarry Manager. However, there are additional statutory requirements that must be met before these Certificates of Competence can be awarded. Please refer to the special notes for further details about the additional requirements.

The National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Mining Administration Surface Extraction A Grade) (Level 5) [Ref: 1537] builds on the National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Mining Administration Surface Extraction B Grade) (Level 5) [Ref: 1536], which is a prerequisite for award of this qualification. This is a capstone qualification.

While this qualification has standards in common with the National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Supervision) (Level 5) with strands in Surface Extraction, and Underground Extraction [Ref: 1523], it is intended only to cover the role-specific technical requirements of the relevant Certificates of Competence and is not intended to be part of the same qualification pathway.

The qualification pathway that includes the the National Certificate in Extractive Industries (Supervision) (Level 5) with strands in Surface Extraction, and Underground Extraction [Ref: 1523], is intended for those in a wide range of industry roles and develops additional skills and knowledge relating to extractive industries worksites such as team work and people management, organisational requirements and management, and health and safety.
