Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the energy and chemical plant industry with competent workers who have attained the operational skills and knowledge required to work as control room operators.

This qualification is suitable for individuals working as process operators in an energy and chemical plant, or those wishing to enter the role.

The qualification is stranded to recognise the specialist knowledge and skills required to operate a range of energy and chemical plant equipment and processes.

Graduates of the optional strands will also be able to operate a gas or steam turbine.

Graduates will be capable of operating an energy and chemical plant in a self-managed capacity under broad guidance.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply risk assessment and health and safety procedures when working in an energy and chemical plant.
- Plan, isolate, purge, and recommission a section of an energy and chemical plant.
- Operate and monitor control systems to identify and respond to process faults in an energy and chemical plant.

Graduates of the Advanced Steam Generation Plant Operation strand will also be able to:
- Operate and monitor an advanced steam generation equipment and process in an energy and chemical plant.

Graduates of the Chemical Plant Operation strand will also be able to:
- Operate and monitor chemical equipment and processes in an energy and chemical plant.

Graduates of the Geothermal Plant Operation strand will also be able to:
- Operate and monitor geothermal equipment and processes in an energy and chemical plant.

Graduates of the Petrochemical Plant Operation strand will also be able to:
- Process petrochemicals in an energy and chemical plant.

Graduates of the Petrochemical Transfer and Storage strand will also be able to:
- Transfer and store petrochemical products in an energy and chemical plant.

Graduates of the Gas Turbine Operation strand will also be able to:
- Operate and monitor a gas turbine in an energy and chemical plant.

Graduates of the Steam Turbine Operation strand will also be able to:
- Operate and monitor a steam turbine in an energy and chemical plant.
Education pathways
This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Energy and Chemical Process Operations (Level 3) with an optional strand in Boiler Operations [Ref: 4128].

This qualification can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Energy and Chemical Process Operations (Level 5) [Ref: 2308].
Entry Requirements
Completion of one of the strands is required to achieve this qualification. If the workplace has a gas or steam turbine learners can also complete one of the optional strands. The qualification cannot be achieved by completion of the optional strands alone.
