Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the wool harvesting industry with people who have gained the knowledge and practical skills to shear sheep that have limited variation in wool characteristics.

To achieve this certificate graduates must be able to carry out shearing tasks relevant to one of the following contexts to meet the outcomes: blade shear, machine shear crossbred wool, or machine shear fine wool.

The trainee will benefit by having a qualification within a training pathway that recognises progression through the industry, as well as increased skills and knowledge acquisition to enable improved job performance and increased remuneration.

The sheep farming and wool harvesting industries will benefit by having people with shearing skills who will maximise returns to the grower.

Graduates will be capable of working under limited supervision.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Set up, identify and rectify faults, and expert shearing equipment throughout the shearing process.
- Carry out routine maintenance of the shearing plant throughout the shearing process.
- Shear sheep that have a limited range in variation of wool characteristics.
Education pathways
The relevant qualifier of this qualification builds on the relevant qualifier on the Crutching and Shearing strand of the New Zealand Certificate in Wool Harvesting (Level 2) with strands in Crutching, Wool Handling, and Crutching and Shearing [Ref: 2391] and can lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Shearing (Blade/Crossbred/Fine) (Level 4) [Ref: 2401].
