Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is intended for people who are experienced workers in the horticulture industry who want to develop their skills and knowledge to supervise day to day operations in a horticulture services subsector or area within a subsector.

It recognises the specific skills and knowledge of individuals who can, in a self-managed capacity, take responsibility for the daily operations in the amenity, arboriculture, cemetery, garden centre, landscape design, landscape construction, or sports turf sector.

Graduates will be able to work independently and may have some responsibility for the performance of others.

The qualification includes strands that recognise the distinct skills and knowledge for specific horticulture services sectors.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply knowledge of supervision and provide instruction to engage with team members using a range of effective communication and interpersonal skills relevant to a horticulture sector.

Graduates of the Amenity strand will also be able to:
- Implement and monitor an operational plan for the care of parks, gardens, and open spaces.
- Apply knowledge of horticulture science to achieve functional and aesthetic effects of plants, gardens, and open spaces.

Graduates of the Arboriculture strand will also be able to:
- Apply knowledge of trees and impacts on tree health and structure when carrying out routine tree maintenance and management activities at heights and around hazards in a range of working conditions.
- Demonstrate rescue techniques when working at heights.
- Carry out tree removal using a range of felling techniques.

Graduates of the Cemetery strand will also be able to:
- Carry out and oversee cremations, interments, and dis-interments of caskets and ash.
- Carry out and oversee the installation and maintenance of features and infrastructure in the cemetery environment.

Graduates of the Garden Centre strand will also be able to:
- Apply specialist product knowledge of merchandise, plants, and plant displays to oversee garden centre operations and respond to customer requirements.
- Maintain and monitor inventory to meet business targets in a garden centre operation.

Graduates of the Landscape Design strand will also be able to:
- Demonstrate design and technical skills to create a simple garden design for a client on a flat or near flat residential style site.

Graduates of the Landscape Construction strand will also be able to:
- Apply knowledge of hard and soft landscaping and site-specific requirements to schedule site activities and construct a landscape design from plans.
- Develop sketches of a range of hard and soft landscape features for on-site use to assist interpretation and implementation of landscape plans, and develop materials lists.

Graduates of the Sports Turf strand will also be able to:
- Develop and implement annual sports turf maintenance plans consistent with enterprise and sports turf specifications.
- Produce financial costings for a sports turf annual budget.
- Implement sports turf workplace health and safety, and risk management plans.

The Sports Turf strand may lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Sports Turf (Level 5) [Ref: 2675].
The Amenity strand may lead to the New Zealand Diploma in Amenity Horticulture (Level 5) [Ref: 4284].
The Landscape Construction strand may lead to the Construction strand of the New Zealand Diploma in Landscape (Level 5) with strands in Construction, and Design [Ref: 2888].
The Landscape Design strand may lead to the Design strand of the New Zealand Diploma in Landscape (Level 5) with strands in Construction, and Design [Ref: 2888].
The Arboriculture strand may lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Arboriculture (Level 5) with strands in Supervisory Operations, and Technical Operations [Ref: 2670].
