Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the civil engineering industry with people who can troubleshoot and evaluate civil engineering testing results and lead a team to ensure quality management of civil engineering laboratory activities and information, which is vital for engineers in the design and quality control of civil engineering projects.
This is a technical level qualification in a specialised area of work. Individuals entering this qualification should possess the knowledge and skills required to work in, or be currently working in, a civil engineering laboratory. Graduates will be capable of working independently without supervision, in at least one of the following contexts: aggregate, asphalt, bitumen, concrete, field investigations, and soil. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Lead a team to achieve a project outcome in a civil engineering laboratory. - Manage the health, safety, environment and quality of activities in a civil engineering laboratory. - Determine, evaluate, and report on precision and bias in civil engineering laboratory proficiency data. - Quantify and validate the uncertainty of measurements in test results. - Apply knowledge of commercialism to determine costs of laboratory services to clients. Graduates of the Aggregate strand will also be able to: - Evaluate and troubleshoot aggregate tests in a civil engineering laboratory. Graduates of the Asphalt strand will also be able to: - Evaluate and troubleshoot asphalt tests in a civil engineering laboratory. Graduates of the Bitumen strand will also be able to: - Evaluate and troubleshoot bitumen tests in a civil engineering laboratory. Graduates of the Concrete strand will also be able to: - Evaluate and troubleshoot concrete tests in a civil engineering laboratory. Graduates of the Field Investigations strand will also be able to: - Evaluate and troubleshoot field investigations in a civil engineering laboratory. Graduates of the Soil strand will also be able to: - Evaluate and troubleshoot soil tests in a civil engineering laboratory. |

This qualification may lead to qualifications in management such as the New Zealand Diploma in Business (with strands in Accounting, Administration and Technology, Leadership and Management, and Māori Business and Management) (Level 6) [Ref: 2460]. |
