Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the mechanical engineering, construction, manufacturing, fabrication, refrigeration and air conditioning, and mechanical building services, industries with advanced tradespeople who are able to contribute to the success and competitiveness of a business by demonstrating leadership in a technical and/or operational field.

The qualification is designed for people who have already completed a mechanical engineering-related Level 4 trade qualification and wish to further develop their technical and/or operational knowledge and skills within their chosen discipline of mechanical engineering, construction, manufacturing, fabrication, refrigeration and air conditioning, and mechanical building services.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to work independently as advanced tradespeople in their chosen discipline in the mechanical engineering, fabrication, construction, manufacturing, mechanical building services, or refrigeration and air conditioning industries.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply relevant Health and Safety legislation, regulations, and good practice in workplace safety culture, to meet workplace safety requirements and opportunities for improvement of all work under own engineering related area of control.
- Apply advanced technical and/or operational skills within a chosen discipline and knowledge of critical problem-solving techniques and skills to recommend solutions for mechanical engineering, construction, manufacturing, or fabrication processes.
- Use advanced knowledge of structured processes, systems, and strategies to show how they apply within a chosen discipline.
- Use knowledge of project management principles and how they are applied within a chosen discipline.
- Manage a mechanical engineering project/operation/complex job within chosen discipline
- Drive the application of effective and efficient processes and principles, and quality management systems, and continuous improvement processes with recommended solutions within own chosen engineering discipline and related area of control.
- Apply basic investigation skills and technical reporting to identify findings and recommend, a potential energy efficiency or sustainability opportunity, a new technology and how it may be employed to improve, or replace an existing mechanical engineering, construction, manufacturing, or fabrication process.
- Train or mentor people to understand the importance of working within the limits of their ability, to seek guidance when necessary, and to ensure quality mechanical engineering, construction, manufacturing or fabrication outcomes.

Entry Requirements
People enrolling into programmes leading to this qualification must hold one of the following qualifications or equivalent skills and knowledge:
- New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) (Level 4) with strands in Fitting and Machining, General Engineering, Machining, Maintenance Engineering, Metal Forming, and Toolmaking [Ref: 2714]
- New Zealand Certificate in Engineering Fabrication (Trade) (Level 4) with strands in Heavy Fabrication, Light Fabrication, and Steel Construction [Ref: 2719]
- New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Building Services (Trade) (Level 4) [Ref: 2717]
- New Zealand Certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (Trade) (Level 4) [Ref: 2366]
