Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification provides the resource recovery industry with individuals who have attained the skills, knowledge and competencies required to operate machinery safely and effectively in a resource recovery environment. They will be able to work with processors and other operators to handle and process material in the resource recovery workplace relevant to their chosen strand.
This qualification has been designed for individuals who are already working in the industry.
Graduates will be able to work under limited supervision.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Comply with legislative requirements, workplace health and safety, and environmental procedures and contribute to incident reporting and risk assessment procedures in a resource recovery environment.
- Contribute to data collection and reporting in a resource recovery environment.
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders in a resource recovery environment..
- Identify hazardous materials and apply safety and risk reporting procedures in a resource recovery environment.
- Operate, monitor, control and maintain machinery and equipment in a resource recovery environment.
- Apply principles of circular economy and kaitiakitanga in a resource recovery environment.

Graduates of the Organic Materials Processing strand will also be able to:
- Apply knowledge of organic materials processing principles to undertake operations at an organic materials processing workplace.

Graduates of the Recovery and Recycling strand will also be able to:
- Identify, sort, grade and store items received at a resource recovery or recycling workplace.

Graduates of the Metal Recycling strand will also be able to:
- Receive, grade, and weigh metals and other material items for purchase at a metal recycling workplace.

This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Resource Recovery (Level 2) [Ref: 2743].
This qualification leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Resource Recovery (Level 4) with strands in Organic Materials Processing, Recovery and Recycling, and Metal Recycling [Ref: 2745].
