Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the electrotechnology industry sectors with people who are able to install and maintain networks and systems or service and repair a diverse range of end-user appliances, goods and/or equipment at a non-complex level.
This qualification is suitable for people who wish to pursue a career in the electrotechnology installation and maintenance or service and repair industry sectors.
Graduates of the Installation Strand will be able to undertake the installation, maintenance, restoration, scoping and connectivity of efficient, reliable, and secure data and communication systems and hardware, and be able to operate as technicians at an intermediate level where no prescribed electrical work is required.
Graduates of the Service Strand will be able to diagnose, repair and service a diverse range of end-user appliances, and goods and/or equipment at a non-complex level and supervise electrical workers. They will also be eligible to be registered and licensed as an Electrical Appliance Serviceperson (endorsed to disconnect and connect) (EAS endorsed).
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply safe working procedures and practices in their role and identify and respond to hazards and environmental and economic considerations in an electrotechnology workplace environment.
- Apply relevant industry, community, government and environmental legislation, standards, codes of practice and industry guidelines when performing electrotechnology work.
- Apply fundamental knowledge and principles of service, installation and related electrical and electronics theory and practice when performing electrotechnology work.
- Communicate effectively and ethically with internal and external stakeholders.

Graduates of the Installation strand will also be able to:
- Apply safe working procedures and practices in their role and identify and control special hazards impacting on installations when performing electrotechnology work.
- Select, install, commission and maintain systems, hardware, and related ICT systems and services at a non-complex level.
- Interconnect associated systems and services to achieve optimal performance of the service or system.
- Diagnose and repair systems, equipment and services to ensure systems are working optimally.

Graduates of the Service strand will also be able to:
- Diagnose and repair non-complex faults on end-user appliances, goods and/or equipment to module level.
- Perform service and maintenance routines on end-user appliances, goods and/or equipment.
- Demonstrate the competencies required by the EWRB for registration as an electrical appliance serviceperson (endorsed to disconnect and connect) (EAS endorsed).

- New Zealand Certificate in Customer Premises Systems (Level 4) with strands in Structured Cabling, Control and Automation, Signal Reception and Distribution, and Wireless Systems [Ref: 2769]
- New Zealand Certificate in Electronic Engineering (Level 4) [Ref: 2981]
- New Zealand Certificate in Electronic Security (Level 4) with optional strands in Electrical Appliance Serviceperson (Endorsed), and Electrical Installer [Ref: 3818]
