Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the mining and quarrying industry with managers who have the breadth of technical knowledge, leadership, planning, and business skills and knowledge required to manage or oversee all aspects of operations for a site or business unit. The mining and quarrying industry includes surface and underground sectors.

The surface sector can include mining, quarrying, and/or processing. The underground sector can include mining or tunnelling.

This qualification is targeted at supervisors from within the industry, managers with related experience, or university graduates, who are looking to enter the industry.

Learners will benefit by having a qualification which recognises mining and quarrying management skills, provides knowledge to enable improved job performance, and a credential to enhance employment opportunities.

The mining and quarrying industry will benefit by having managers with the skills and knowledge to undertake and implement all aspects of long-term operational and strategic planning for a workplace.

Graduates will be capable of working in an autonomous management capacity, and are likely to have control over all aspects of long-term operational and strategic planning for a mining and quarrying operation.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Manage and provide leadership in all areas of mining and quarrying operations, including staff recruitment, performance and training.
- Apply in-depth technical knowledge of mining and quarrying processes to plan and manage long-term operations at a mining and quarrying site.
- Apply legislative and regulatory requirements, and strategic and financial planning to manage a mining and quarrying site.
- Establish and maintain workplace management systems in relation to risk, health and safety, and the environment at a mining and quarrying site.
- Investigate and analyse incidents at a mining and quarrying site.
- Engage and communicate orally and in writing with mining and quarrying operation clients, internal staff, local bodies and government organisations, the government regulator, external specialists, and the general public.
Education pathways
This qualification may follow on from the New Zealand Diploma in Mining and Quarrying (Supervision) (Level 5) with strands in Surface and Underground [Ref: 2787].

Graduates will be equipped to continue studying at degree level towards mine engineering or business qualifications.
