Strategic Purpose Statement |
This qualification is for people working or anticipating working as a leader, foreman, supervisor, vessel planner or yard planner in the port operations industry. It provides a credential for those already working in these roles in the industry.
The qualification will provide the port operations industry with people who are able to plan vessel loading or supervise port operations. The graduates will have advanced knowledge and be able to operate without supervision. Learners will benefit by having a qualification which recognises skills and knowledge in port operations or vessel loading. This will support improved job performance and will provide a credential to enhance employment opportunities. Port organisations will benefit in increased efficiency by having staff with recognised skills and knowledge to competently plan vessel loading or supervise port operations. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Manage legislative and health and safety requirements for port cargo movements and storage to ensure safe and efficient port operations. - Apply knowledge of the strategic management of cargo flow to plan port cargo operation. - Apply communication and leadership skills to oversee shifts, labour force, and machinery resources. Graduates of the Vessel Planning strand will also be able to: - Apply knowledge of vessel types and their cargo carrying capabilities to compare loading options. - Plan vessel loading and use cargo management systems to load a vessel. Graduates of the Yard Planning strand will also be able to: - Prepare and implement a yard plan to manage capacity and resources. - Plan and manage port cargo movements to efficiently control the movement and storage of cargo. |

This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Port Operations (Level 3) with strands in Port Administration, Cargo Handling, and Heavy Machine Operation [Ref: 2814].
There is no specific education pathway. This qualification may lead to higher level qualifications in management or logistics related fields. |
