Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to operate as a safe and effective deck crew member under limited supervision on vessels of less than 24 metres in length, operating in restricted and near coastal waters.
The qualification is for people entering the industry and for those moving to a role where a Maritime NZ Qualified Deck Crew certificate may be required. Award of this certificate by Maritime NZ will also require the completion of a logbook and oral exam. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Apply seamanship knowledge and skills to the safe operation of the vessel at the support level. - Contribute to the health and safety of all persons on board the vessel. - Apply knowledge of emergency procedures and be able to contribute to the safety of the vessel in an emergency. |

This qualification builds on the:
- New Zealand Certificate in Domestic Maritime Crewing (Level 2) [Ref: 2508]. This qualification leads to the: - New Zealand Certificate in Domestic Maritime Operations (Restricted Limits) (Level 4) [Ref: 2505] - New Zealand Certificate in Domestic Maritime Operations (Coastal and Offshore) (Level 4) [Ref: 2892]. Graduates may also progress to qualifications recognised internationally under the Standards for Training Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) such as: - New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing (Level 3) with strands in Deck Crewing, Engineering, Passenger Services, and Superyacht Crewing [Ref: 2506] - New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Operations (Level 4) with strands in Fishing and Watchkeeping [Ref: 2513] - New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Operations (Level 5) [Ref: 2512] - New Zealand Diploma in Nautical Science (Level 6) [Ref: 2515]. |
