Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is designed to provide the primary products food processing industry with competent entry level employees who have the skills and knowledge to work in a laboratory, or an environmental or product quality role, in a primary products food processing operation.

The qualification includes strands that recognises the skills and knowledge required for specific job roles in the primary products food processing operation.

Graduates will benefit by having a qualification within a training pathway that recognises progression through the primary products food processing industry as well as increased skills and knowledge acquisition to enable improved job performance and support career opportunities.

Graduates will be capable of working under limited supervision with responsibility for work outcomes.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply knowledge of legislation to comply with workplace safety, environmental and quality assurance requirements in a primary products food processing operation.
- Work in a team and communicate effectively in a primary products food processing operation.

Graduates of the Laboratory Skills strand will also be able to:
- Carry out basic laboratory operations in a primary products food processing operation

Graduates of the Environmental Systems strand will also be able to:
- Carry out basic environmental processing systems operations in a primary products food processing operation

Graduates of the Product Quality Implementation strand will also be able to:
- Carry out product quality implementation check operations in a primary products food processing operation
Education pathways
This is an entry-level qualification within the primary products food processing industry.
This qualification may lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Primary Products Food Processing (Level 4) with strands in Laboratory Skills, Environmental Systems, and Product Quality Auditing [Ref: 2918].
Entry Requirements
Tertiary Education Organisations offering programmes leading to this qualification must maintain currency with amendments to, and replacements of, legislation, regulations, and Codes of Practice relevant to the industry sector, which may include:
- Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997;
- Animal Products Act 1999;
- Biosecurity Act 1993;
- Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996;
- Health and Safety at Work Act 2015;
- Resource Management Act 1991;
- Local by-laws;
