Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the marine industry with people who are able to install electrical and electronics systems or engineering systems.
This is an entry level qualification for people intending to enter or who are already working in a marine systems environment. Graduates will have the specialised knowledge and skills of the componentry aspects of a service engineer or technician role dependent upon which strand is achieved. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Apply health and safety practices to ensure own safety and minimise potential hazards and environmental risk in a marine systems environment. - Collaborate and contribute to the achievement of team objectives in a marine systems environment. - Apply specific industry knowledge and terminology to communicate effectively; and behave in a professional manner with colleagues, managers, and customers. - Select and use a range of products, materials, hand and power tools, and plant and equipment relevant to common tasks in a marine systems environment. Graduates of the Systems Engineering strand will also be able to: - Interpret specifications to sketch proposals or solutions for vessel engineering components or systems. - Interpret schematics to enable installation of vessel engineering components or systems. - Manage and support the installation and integration of all vessel systems. - Maintain, repair, and service fluid handling, mechanical, and steerage systems. - Produce, lift, and support the components for installation of vessel engineering systems. - Evaluate vessel engineering components and systems to ensure they are fit for purpose in relation to classification, specifications, and rules. Graduates of the Electrical-Electronic strand will also be able to: - Manage the installation of vessel electrical and electronic components, and power systems. - Interpret schematics to enable installation of vessel electrical and electronic components or systems. - Evaluate components of vessel electrical and electronic systems to ensure they are fit for purpose in relation to classification, specifications and rules. |

Education pathways |
This qualification may build on the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 1, 2, or 3.
Graduates of this qualification may progress to the New Zealand Diploma in Marine Vessel Project Management (Level 6) (New Build/Refit) [Ref: 3127]. |
