Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the commercial fishing sector with people who are able to work as operators undertaking fish and fish product handling activities in an in-shore or deep-water environment.
This qualification is for people who intend to work in the commercial fishing industry, and to provide formal recognition for the skills of those already working within the industry.
This qualification is stranded to recognize the specialist skills required in either a shellfish, wet fish, or frozen fish context.
Graduates will be capable of working under limited supervision with responsibility for their own work outcomes.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Comply with hygiene, food safety and workplace safety requirements relating to commercial fishing, and fish and fish product handling activities.
- Communicate and interact effectively with team members and colleagues in a commercial fishing operation.

Graduates of the Shellfish strand will also be able to:
- Carry out routine commercial wild shellfish harvesting operations and post-harvest shellfish handling.

Graduates of the Wet Fish strand will also be able to:
- Carry out routine commercial wet fish harvesting operations and post-harvest wet fish handling.

Graduates of the Frozen Fish strand will also be able to:
- Carry out routine commercial fishing operations and post-harvest handling of frozen fish.
