Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the trowel trades sector with graduates who are able to complete specific trowel trade work to the standards the construction industry requires of a commercially competent trade professional.

This qualification is targeted at people entering into or working in the trowel trades sectors of the construction industry.

The strands in this qualification recognise the knowledge and skills required to perform specific trowel trades. The optional strands recognise specialised skills required for some specific trowel trades.

The Brick and Block Laying, Solid Plastering and Proprietary Plaster Cladding Systems strands support the knowledge and skill requirements of the appropriate license class and/or areas of practice of the Licensed Building Practitioner scheme.

Graduates will be able to work unsupervised and perform to the required safety, technical, quality and productivity standards expected in the trowel trades industry.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Set up, operate and maintain tools and equipment used to carry out trowel trades work.
- Apply legislative requirements and the principles of building science to carry out trowel trades works to industry standards.
- Interpret job plans and specifications, undertake measurements and perform calculations to carry out trowel trades work to a commercially viable standard.
- Plan own work schedules and communicate effectively with other parties to trowel trades works.
- Operate to and maintain the required standards of a commercially competent tradesperson.
- Develop and maintain ongoing learning and emerging work practices specific to the trowel trades.
- Provide leadership for people working in a trowel trades environment.

Graduates of the Brick and Block Laying strand will also be able to:
- Comply with New Zealand consent compliance requirements for brick and block work.
- Carry out masonry veneer work to job specifications and industry standards.
- Carry out structural masonry work to job specifications and industry standards.
- Carry out masonry work to form decorative features to job specifications and industry standards.

Graduates of the Floor and Wall Tiling strand will also be able to:
- Carry out under-tile waterproofing in wet areas to manufacturer's specifications and industry standards.
- Prepare substrates and surfaces for fixing tiles in dry areas to job specifications and industry standards.
- Cut, fix and finish floor and wall tiles in wet and dry areas to job specifications and industry standards.

Graduates of the Proprietary Plaster Cladding Systems strand will also be able to:
- Comply with New Zealand consent compliance requirements for proprietary plaster cladding work.
- Carry out proprietary plaster cladding system installation and repair work to job specifications and industry standards.
- Install decorative plaster mouldings to job specifications and industry standards.

Graduates of the Ferro-cement Tank Manufacture strand will also be able to:
- Set up moulds, formwork and reinforcing for the manufacture of ferro-cement tanks to job specifications and industry standards.
- Apply sand and cement plaster to coat tank surfaces to job specifications and industry standards.
- Carry out the placing and finishing of concrete components in ferro-cement tanks to job specifications and industry standards.

Graduates of the Refractory Installation strand will also be able to:
- Comply with New Zealand consent compliance and work permit requirements for refractory installation.
- Lay refractory bricks or blocks to job and manufacturer's specifications.
- Install refractory mixes to job and manufacturer's specifications.
- Carry out refractory maintenance and repairs to job and manufacturer's specifications.

Graduates of the Solid Plastering strand will also be able to:
- Comply with New Zealand consent compliance requirements for solid plastering work.
- Carry out the preparation of light framed and solid substrates for solid plastering to job specifications and industry standards.
- Apply solid plastering to job specifications and industry standards.
- Carry out solid plastering maintenance and repair work to job specifications and industry standards.

Graduates of the Fixing Cavities and Substrates strand will also be able to:
- Carry out fixing of cavities and substrates in preparation for proprietary plaster cladding systems to job specifications and to industry standards.

Graduates of the Decorative Mouldings strand will also be able to:
- Create and install decorative mouldings to job specifications and industry standards.
Education pathways
This qualification may lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trades Supervision (Level 5) with strands in Residential Building, Commercial Construction, Construction Related Trades, and Construction Related Manufacturing [Ref: 4237].
