The Bachelor of Screen Arts aims to equip students with the professional, creative, analytical, and technical skills to prepare them for employment or further study in the film, animation, television, cinematographic, and digital media industries.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Screen Arts can conceive, execute and promote digital film or animation production to industry standard. They have the ability to research and analyse subject related areas for a range of research outputs in both the industry and academic arenas. They have a broad base theoretical and practical knowledge of business andlegal aspects of the animation and film industries incorporating copyright, censorship, purpose contracts, budget preparation and marketing. All graduates have the ability to professionally screenwrite and edit material, demonstrate core technical skills in the design and creation of 2D and 3D digital images, and are able to explain the fundamental principles of operating digital camera and producing well composed shots with quality sound and lighting. Graduates can produce CG short film, explain production roles within a studio environment, demonstrate effective work practices within a team environment and work within intensive time structures. They can also design and plan effective management tools and evaluate and problem solve to ensure project quality. Graduates have the ability to promote themselves and their finished projects in the marketplace. All graduates have developed leadership and teamwork qualities and are able to undertake a range of film and television employment opportunities or continue with further study.

Graduates wishing to undertake further study may be admitted into master's programmes in New Zealand or overseas, possibly with some credit recognition

Application Criteria Application by Academic Qualification Applicants under 20 years: University Entrance - NCEA Level 3 Three subjects - at Level 3, made up of: - 14 credits each, in three NZQA University Entrance approved subjects, and Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of: - 5 credits in reading - 5 credits in writing, and Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of - specified achievement standards through a range of subjects, or - package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627 - all three required); or Applicants over 20 years: Be at least 20 years of age when the programme begins and provide evidence of aptitude or appropriate work or other experience; or Completion of an external or overseas qualification, which is considered to be the equivalent of any of the above qualifications, as approved by the Head of Faculty. Special Admission Notwithstanding the above admissions categories, in exceptional circumstances, an applicant below the age of twenty who can show evidence of ability to succeed in the programme may be considered for admission, provided the applicant has successfully completed an approved course or programme which is deemed to prepare graduates for the required academic standard for entry. An applicant who does not meet academic criteria, may be provisionally admitted to enrol in one or more Year One papers, provided he or she meets the requirements above. Upon successful completion of the papers, the student may apply for special admission or admission by mature entry. Additional Criteria Applicants for the Bachelor of Screen Arts are required to submit a portfolio of their work with their application and may be asked for a written submission also. English Language Requirements Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate of at least 80 percent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having passed an NZQA approved English Proficiency Assessment, or one of the following tests of English language competence in accordance with the NZQA rules below: - IELTS test - Academic score of 6, with no band score lower than 5.5 - TOEFL Paper-based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE) - TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) - Score of 60 (with a writing score of 20) - University of Cambridge English Examinations - FCE, or FCE for schools, or CAE, or CPE with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill - NZCEL - Level 4 with the Academic endorsement - Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PtoE (Academic) score of 50 - City & Guilds IESOL - B2 Communicator with a score of 66 Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate below 80 per cent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English must provide evidence that they: a) Have gained NCEA Level 3 and met New Zealand University Entrance requirements or b) Hold a bachelor's degree of at least 3 years from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, The Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States of America or c) Have achieved a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, CELTA or d) Have achieved one of the English Language competence tests specified above Selection Criteria Right of entry into programmes of study is restricted by SIT and apparent eligibility may not lead to automatic acceptance. Applicants must demonstrate academic attributes that, in the assessment of SIT, should lead to success. Where SIT is satisfied that it is necessary to do so because of insufficiency of staff, accommodation, or equipment it may determine the maximum number of students who may be enrolled in a particular course of study. Where the number of applications for enrolment exceeds the number of places in any case where such a limitation applies, the criteria for selection shall be academic merit and suitability for admission to that course of study. Eligible students not admitted to their chosen course of study will be placed on a waiting list and/or referred to another programme. Applications should be received by SIT no later than the due date. Late applications may be considered, subject to availability of places. Applicants may be required to attend an interview, or if they live at some distance from the campus, complete a telephone or skype interview. Applicants may be required to provide copies of applicable certificates and evidence of previous achievements prior to the interview date. The Head of Faculty will determine the maximum number of students permitted to enrol in the degree programme. All enrolments in the Bachelor of Screen Arts are approved at the discretion of the Programme Manager in consultation with the Head of Faculty and teaching staff as required.
