Strategic Purpose Statement
The Waiariki Certificate in Agriculture aims to provide core agriculture skills and knowledge to entry level students that will enable graduates to succeed in the industry as employees. This is primarily a pre employment programme with a strong emphasis on practical skills.
The focus of this qualification is on acquisition of basic skills in farming situations involving the use of tractors, motorcycles, Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV) and All Terrain Vehicles (ATV); handling and treatment of livestock; and electric and non-electric fence components and the safe use of agrichemicals. An important aspect of basic skills acquisition is gaining knowledge of the associated safety requirements applicable to all farming situations.
Within this programme is the National Certificate in Agriculture (Level 2) that gives the graduates a nationally recognised qualification.
Graduate profile
On successful completion of this qualification, students will have the skills and knowledge to be able to carry out day to day farming tasks (such as set up of a milking shed for milking and milk cows) safely and efficiently with a minimum of supervision.
Education pathways
Students may move onto further learning at a higher level or study or onto Agriculture ITO modern apprentices.
