Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of this certificate is to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to carry out automotive workshop servicing and repair work. This qualification provides an entry level platform for students to gain an apprenticeship within the automotive trades or to staircase to higher level qualifications and gain the full National Certificate in Motor Industry (Automotive Engineering) (Level 4).
Graduate profile
After successful completion of this qualification, graduates will be able to:

* operate in a safe and professional manner within an automotive workshop environment;
* carry out minor electrical fault diagnosis and repairs;
* perform fault diagnosis and repairs on brake, transmission and steering systems;
* diagnose the condition of wheels and tyres;
* carry out tyre repairs and wheel balancing;
* undertake basic engine and general workshop servicing;
* demonstrate knowledge of fuel systems and perform minor servicing on fuel systems;
* provide customer service, respond to customer enquiries and carry out administrative workshop functions;
* remove and replace vehicle exhaust systems and cambelts;
* use gas welding equipment and techniques to perform automotive repairs;
* perform vehicle appraisals;
* organise and manage their time and workload; and
* pursue an area of interest.
Education pathways
Students may move onto further learning in the fields of automotive engineering at Waiariki Institute of Technology or other registered providers.
