Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of this certificate is to provide students with pre-employment skills and knowledge for entry to the electrotechnology and related industries. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of and practical experience in the principles of electricity and magnetism, electrical diagrams, circuits and componentry, electrical testing, measurements and calculations, workplace safety, first aid, employment skills, and basic carpentry, engineering and mechanical skills. This qualification includes a significant work placement component enabling students to apply knowledge and skills in real-world, commercial operations, and gain an insight to the electrotechnology industry.
The qualification covers the first level of learning for qualifications as an electrician, or in switchgear fitting, motor rewinding and repair, industrial measurement and control, electronic security and other associated trades. On completion of this qualification, students can pursue employment opportunities in the electrotechnology and related industries, and undertake further study towards becoming trade-qualified via an industry apprenticeship.
Students should also be aware that the Skills Organisation requires 10 NCEA credits at Level 1 in science, English and maths for entry to an apprenticeship.
Graduate profile
Graduates will be able to:
* work in the electrical engineering industry or in a related trade at an introductory level;
* understand workplace and electrical safety, and apply safe working practices including the safe use of electrical, carpentry and welding equipment and tools;
* perform first aid and carry out cardio-pulmonary resuscitation in emergency situations;
* apply a working knowledge of legislation and regulations relevant to electrical trades;
* demonstrate fundamental knowledge of electrical circuits, principles of electricity and magnetism, electrical and electronic components, control circuits, fixed wired electrical appliances, simple mathematics and mechanics, and electrical instruments;
* draw and interpret simple electrical diagrams;
* perform simple electrical calculations, testing and measurements relevant to the electrical trades;
* install flexible cords, locate electrical faults, and perform soldering of wires and components;
* demonstrate carpentry, engineering and mechanical skills relevant to the electrotechnology industry;
* understand employment rights and responsibilities;
* demonstrate fundamental work skills including workplace numeracy and literacy, verbal and written communication, time management, and work ethics; and
* work toward an apprenticeship in an electrotechnology or related trade and/or pursue further study at a higher level.

Students may move onto further learning in the electrotechnology and related industries.
