Strategic Purpose Statement |
The Graduate Diploma in Social Services is designed to prepare graduates who can work across a range of social service settings, by applying models of practice that are informed by theory and research, in accordance with professional standards and expectations in an area of specialty practice. Graduates are prepared for employment opportunities across the social services sector both nationally and internationally.

All Graduate Diploma in Social Services (Specialty) graduates will have the ability to:
* Construct a comprehensive, integrated model of practice. * Use critical thinking skills to analyse and evaluate information and facilitate change. * Demonstrate appropriate self-awareness in professional and interpersonal situations. * Practise within professional guidelines. * Demonstrate bicultural competency and culturally responsive practice, applying the provisions of the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in an Aotearoa NZ context. |

Education pathways |
It is expected that graduates can gain entry into post graduate level qualifications at other institutions (dependent on meeting specialisation-relevant entry criteria of these institutions). Possible programmes could include the Masters in Counselling at Massey University, the University of Auckland, the University of Canterbury and the University of Waikato; postgraduate programmes in advanced psychotherapy at Auckland University of Technology, the Master in Career Development at Auckland University of Technology, and Applied Masters in Social Work at the Universities of Otago, Canterbury and Massey University.

Entry Requirements |
To be admitted to the Graduate Diploma, applicants must have been awarded the Bachelor of Social Services or the Bachelor of Social Services (endorsed in Counselling or Career Practice) or an equivalent qualification or demonstrate equivalent practical, professional or
educational experience of an appropriate kind. International ākonga applicants must meet the same entry criteria as those listed above and those for whom English is not their first language must also meet the language requirements listed below. New Zealand University Entrance OR Overall Academic IELTS 6.5 with no individual band score lower than 6.5 (achieved in one test completed in the last two years), OR Acceptable alternative evidence of the required IELTS *For NZQA's minimum English language entry requirements, go to: hererules/programme-approval-and-accreditation/app-2/the-table/ |
