Strategic Purpose Statement |
To produce graduates who can apply the concepts of exercise, health and sport to positively influence on the lives of others. Graduates will have completed a series of industry/community projects that will have allowed them to consider their practice from multiple perspectives and develop transferable skills. This qualification prepares learners for further study or an entry-level career in sport, exercise or health.

Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Science will be able to:
a. Apply professional practice skills in the area of exercise, health or sport settings b. Design and conduct research relating to a significant area of inquiry in an exercise, health or sport setting c. Critically evaluate evidence to apply effective and appropriate actions in an identified context d. Apply problem solving techniques, knowledge and skills to address exercise/health/sport issues relevant to others e. Critically apply the principles of exercise science to implement change to a range of populations f. Integrate cultural, social, environmental and economic perspective of sustainability into their practice g. Assess and evaluate the cultural, social, environmental and economic impact of their practice and the practice of others |

Education pathways |
It is expected that graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Science will be able to gain entry into relevant postgraduate qualifications (dependent on meeting programme-specific entry criteria). Possible programmes include the Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Science; Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Science; Master of Applied Science; or Master of Professional Practice at Otago Polytechnic; Master of Public Health, Physical Education or Teaching at the University of Otago; Master of Sport and Exercise, Public Health or Health Science at Massey University; or Master of Health Sciences or Science at the University of Auckland.

Academic Criteria
NCEA Level 3 * Three subjects - at Level 3 or above, made up of: 14 credits each, in three approved subjects * Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above , made up of: 5 credits in reading 5 credits in writing * Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, made up of: achievement standards - specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects, or unit standards - package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627- all three required). OR A qualification at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) equalling 60 credits or more completed within one year. This may be achieved through successful completion of a pre-entry programme such as the Certificate in Health at Otago Polytechnic; completion of pre-entry qualifications does not guarantee automatic entry into this programme. OR University study: successful completion of courses equating to 50% of first year learner workload completed within one year. OR Equivalent professional experience. Additional criteria All applicants who are accepted must obtain a First Aid Certificate, and complete the requirements of the Vulnerable Children's Act 2014 (including police vetting), prior to commencing classes. International learners are also required to achieve a minimum overall IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0, with no band score less than 5.5, from one test taken in the preceding two years, or equivalent. |
