Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the crane industry with individuals who may be employed for a range of tasks at a variety of worksites where cranes are operating.
The qualification is stranded to recognise the differing requirements of the specialist areas. The crane industry, and the building and construction industry in particular, will benefit from having people who can work safely with and around cranes through structured, recognised, and consistent training programmes. Graduates will be capable of working with limited supervision. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Work safely in a variety of crane workplaces, complete a job safety analysis, identify hazards in the workplace, and put controls in place or escalate for further attention. - Demonstrate knowledge of all elements of a lift plan for lifting loads. - Demonstrate crane communications methods used in the crane industry. - Identify load weight and use the appropriate lifting equipment to sling regular loads. - Apply knowledge of The Crane Safety Manual to carry out pre-start and post checks of cranes or lifting equipment. Graduates of the Cab-Controlled Overhead Crane strand will also be able to: - Access and exit a cab-controlled overhead crane, and lift and place regular loads within the working load limit Graduates of the Dogman strand will also be able to: - Apply knowledge of risk management, slinging calculations, and industry recognised communication methods to direct and guide crane movements in relation to loads and equipment. Graduates of the Pendant-Controlled Overhead Crane strand will also be able to: - Lift and place regular loads within a workplace using a pendant or remote controlled overhead crane within the working load limit. Graduates of the Self-Erecting Tower Crane strand will also be able to: - Operate a self-erecting tower crane including lifting and placing regular loads in accordance with rating charts. Graduates of the Truck Loader Crane strand will also be able to: - Operate a truck loader crane within safe working limits including lifting and placing regular loads in accordance with rating charts. |

Education pathways |
This qualification is the entry point into the training pathway for the cranes industry and the broader lifting engineering sector.
Graduates of the Dogman strand may progress onto the New Zealand Certificate in Cranes (Level 4) with strands in Advanced Dogman, Crawler Crane, Mini Crane, Mobile Crane, Non-Slewing Articulated Crane, Tower Crane [Ref: 3731]. Graduates of other strands may progress to qualifications in other areas, such as business or manufacturing and related trades. |
