Strategic Purpose Statement |
This qualification aims to produce bilingual, culturally aware teachers who have the exemplary skills to deliver Māori contextualised, learner centred quality teaching and learning in the primary sector. They will be research active practitioners who competently plan, implement, assess and lead kaupapa Māori informed blended teaching and learning.
The purpose of the Poutāhū Whakaakoranga Akorau is to provide the primary school sector and in particular total immersion and bilingual kura with teachers who bring multiple competencies to the classroom and teaching practices informed by mātauranga Māori that are responsive to the needs of Māori learners. Graduates will be able to work independently in teaching roles and work collaboratively to assist in planning, organising and leading activities within kura to advance the long-term educational propsects of whānau, hapū and iwi. |

Graduates will be bilingual, culturally aware teachers who have the skills to deliver Māori contextualised quality teaching and learning. As research active practitioners their multiple competencies in planning, implementing, assessing and leading kaupapa Māori informed blended teaching and learning will enhance the quality of the learning experience. The profile below outlines the graduate attributes for the Poutāhū Whakaakoranga Akorau:
1. Te Reo - Is dedicated to language revival effort through personal language competency, both oral and written. 2. Whakapapa - Promotes and models the expression of kaupapa Māori as a critical foundation in the reclamation, preservation, revitalisation, enhancement and expansion of mātauranga 3. Manaakitanga - An innovative thinker who is generous, empathetic and tolerant in creating stimulating and flexible learning environments that engage, support and enhance the learning experience. 4. Wairuatanga - able to shape an evolving kaupapa-based teaching philosophy that facilitates the creation of dynamic learning environments that empower, encourage, support and comfort learners, reduce stress and enliven teaching and learning. 5. Ūkaipōtanga - Is respectful of the teaching environment, working comfortably in iwi and hapū communities without compromising their own personal identity.able to teach the curriculum in te reo Māori. 6. Pūkengatanga - critically aware, observant and reflective teaching practitioner; able to plan, teach, assess and lead blended learning curricula that impact positively on learners and assist them to achieve their potential. 7. Kotahitanga - Is flexible, agile, adaptable and responsive to the needs of learners and develops blended teaching strategies that enhance collective learner engagement. 8. Rangtiratanga - Is a confident educational leader who advocates for improved Māori learner experiences and success and is fearless in critiquing educational models and designing appropriate remediation strategies. 9. Whanaungatanga - Establishes and maintains mutually beneficial relationships with colleagues, learners and the community, engaging technology to assist and enhance the relationship.having a well formulated personal philosophy of education. 10. Kaitiakitanga - Provides a safe and encouraging environment that maintains supportive learning experiences, learner wellbeing, and the resources needed to help students flourish, socially, emotionally, and academically. Entry Requirements |
a. In order to be admitted to the Poutāhū Whakaakoranga Akorau programme applicants must: have completed:
- a Bachelor's degree at level 7 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF) consisting of at least 360 credits; or - a Bachelor's degree with Honours at level 8 on the NZQF consisting of at least 480 credits; or - a Master's degree at level 9 on the NZQF consisting of 240 credits b. demonstrate an intermediate to advanced level of te reo Māori c. demonstrate an intermediate level of ICT d. complete a literacy and numeracy assessment e. have a strong desire to teach in a kaupapa Māori environment f. demonstrate maturity and life experience and be of good character appropriate for teaching children g. declare any criminal convictions h. complete the standard police vet process i. attend a selection interview j. meet the Te Wānanga o Raukawa general academic regulations k. Students will require research assistance from an Iwi or Hapū; therefore candidates for the programme need to be able to provide the written commitment of support from their Iwi/Hapū |

The Poutāhu Whakaakoranga Akorau is a one year postgraduate diploma made up of three major categories of subject matter; iwi and hapū studies which provides the contextual base for creating curriculum content for Māori medium, primary education; Whakaakoranga Akorau papers which provide the content and te reo Māori is the language of instruction, the medium by which the learning is transmitted.
The programme offers education theory and practice including a sound theoretical base in teaching, an understanding of effective blended teaching and learning curriculum design, planning and implementation, and practice based research leading to next steps for learners. |
