Strategic Purpose Statement |
The PGDIT provides a first step into postgraduate study for students who wish to pursue a research-oriented academic career, or who wish to enter the IT industry at a higher-than entry-level position. It does this by equipping students with the advanced technical skills, or the skills in independent research, that are required to succeed in either of these career paths.
These technical and research skills are reinforced by the structure and aims of each of the three specialist topics that are available: Software Development; Information Systems; and Networks and Security. Each of these specialist topics requires in-depth knowledge of technical subjects, acquired through sustained independent study and scholarship. The Software Development specialist topic equips students with the skills to pursue the discipline for analysing requirements and design, implement, test and deploy a software application. The Information Systems specialist topic deals with the acquisition, storage, transformation and analysis of data and information within a business setting. The Networks and Security specialist topic deals with the technical issues involved in designing, implementing and administering computer networks. |

-Graduates of the PGDIT specialising in Software Development will be able to:
- Critically analyse application requirements and apply relevant analytical and problem-solving skills to innovative software solutions. - Apply advanced database management technologies to support software applications and the software development process. - Design, develop and critically evaluate high quality software applications for various platforms such as desktop, web and mobile. - Employ critical analytical skills concerning the implementation, evaluation and testing of advanced software development concepts. Graduates of the PGDIT specialising in Networks and Security will be able to: - Design, manage, maintain, administer and troubleshoot computer networks and network servers in complex business environments, guided by an in-depth knowledge of the related theoretical underpinnings. - Employ network infrastructure planning and design methods and techniques to align infrastructure design with complex organisational requirements. - Employ critical analytical skills concerning the implementation, evaluation and troubleshooting of advanced networking concepts. - Analyse common security concepts, implement secure networks and assess the performance of implemented secure methods. - Illustrate and employ an in-depth knowledge of the cellular network infrastructure design concepts and underlying theory. - Differentiate and critically analyse the implementation of the current and emerging technologies in Cloud Computing and Networking architectures. Graduates of the PGDIT specialising in Information Systems will be able to: - Critically analyse the complexities of technology in order to make informed technological decisions to improve the productivity of a data-driven company. - Analyse both information technology and business information practices, in the context of their theoretical bases. - Implement analytics and compile data to derive valuable knowledge to make well informed business decisions. - Design the Information System structure based on the complex local and global influences on individual business organisations and society. - Critically employ advanced technical skills in business data reporting, organisational development, strategic planning processes and analysis of data. |

Content |
The proposed qualification consists of 120 credits, of which 30 credits consists of two 15-credit level 7 courses, with the remaining 90 credits consisting of level 8 courses. There are three pathways through the proposed qualification: Research; Internship; and Industry Project. The research pathway consists of a research methods course, which will equip students with the necessary skills to carry out an individual, supervised, research project. Other courses that are specific to the student's chosen specialist topic will equip the student with the technical skills necessary for that field of study. Students in the Research pathway will also have the option of pursuing the 15-credit level 7 IT Industry Practice course, which will give them experience in the local New Zealand IT industry.
