Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is intended for learners of modern Asian language and culture.
Graduates will have the language skills required to communicate independently in a range of familiar and some less familiar situations, in routine and some non-routine situations, with fluency and flexibility in general, workplace and/or academic modern Asian language contexts.
Graduates will be able to identify and explore modern cultural contexts.
This qualification allows the local and international community members, employers and educational institutions to recognise the level at which the graduate can use modern Asian language for workplace or academic purposes
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply knowledge of modern Asian language and culture to select and evaluate the main points and key supporting detail in extended oral interaction.
- Speak with some coherence, fluency and spontaneity to express personal ideas and apply knowledge of cultural appropriacy pertaining to modern Asian language, to sustain oral interaction.
- Mediate between non-speakers and speakers of modern Asian language with broad cultural appropriacy.
- Read and engage with a range of printed and electronic texts in modern Asian language, applying a broad understanding of cultural nuance.
- Write comprehensible, connected texts in modern Asian language, using handwritten, printed or electronic media, in the appropriate script, with reasonable linguistic accuracy and cultural appropriacy
- Research events and cultural trends in the recent history of a modern Asian country and incorporate knowledge of these into oral and written presentations.
- Incorporate knowledge of contemporary cultural trends in a modern Asian country, to facilitate interactions in a culturally appropriate manner.
- Incorporate knowledge of trends in the contemporary business environment of a modern Asian country to facilitate oral and written business communication.
Education pathways
This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Modern Asian Language (Level 4) [Ref: 3871].
This qualification can lead to further academic or vocational study using modern Asian language at Level 5 or above.
Entry Requirements
Modern Asian language may include Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin, Bahasa Indonesia, Thai, and Vietnamese.

Credits
