Strategic Purpose Statement
The Bachelor of Engineering Technology with majors in Civil Engineering and in Mechanical Engineering is aimed at secondary students who have achieved the requisite entrance qualifications (including NCEA Level 3), at recent New Zealand Diploma in Engineering graduates wishing to undertake a degree programme of study in order to enter the engineering profession, and at existing practitioners (in fields such as roading and transportation, water and wastewater engineering, infrastructure, mechanical engineering and design) wishing to obtain a more senior position.
Graduate profile
Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialisation to defined and applied engineering procedures, processes, systems or methodologies * Identify, formulate, research literature and analyse broadly defined engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using analytical tools appropriate to the discipline or areas of specialization * Design solutions for broadly-defined engineering technology problems and contribute to the design of systems, components or processes to meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations * Conduct investigations of broadly-defined problems; locate, search and select relevant data from codes, databases and literature, design and conduct experiments to provide valid conclusions * Select and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modelling, to broadly-defined engineering problems, with an understanding of the limitations * Demonstrate understanding of the societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to engineering technology practice and solutions to broadly defined engineering problems * Understand and evaluate the sustainability and impact of engineering technology work in the solution of broadly defined engineering problems in societal and engineering contexts * Understand and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of engineering technology practice * Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams * Communicate effectively on broadly-defined engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, by being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear instructions * Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering management principles and apply these to one's own work, as a member or leader in a team and to manage projects in multidisciplinary environments * Recognize the need for, and have the ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in specialist technologies.

Graduates of this degree will be able to apply for postgraduate studies in engineering.
Entry Requirements
Application by Academic Qualification Students will have achieved NCEA Level 3 and met New Zealand university entrance requirements including: * three subjects at level 3, each with a minimum of 14 credits: Physics, Calculus, and one other subject from NZQA's list of approved subjects, and * Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing and * Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above. OR completed the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering OR equivalent. Special Admission Application by Mature Entry (20 years of age and above) Notwithstanding the above admission criteria, mature aged applicants who can show evidence of ability to succeed in the programmes may be considered for admission, provided they have successfully completed an approved course or programme, or have relevant industry experience, which is deemed to meet the required standard for entry. Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate of at least 80 per cent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having achieved one of the following: * NCEA Level 3 with University Entrance, or * Certificate of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), or * Successful completion of a Bachelor 's Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters' Degree or Doctoral Degree, the language of instruction of which must be in English and which must be from a tertiary education provider from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States, or * Successful completion of one of the following internationally recognised proficiency tests listed below to the level required of the programme of study and with all scores achieved in a single test during the preceding 2 years: * IELTS test - Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5 * TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score 5 TWE) * TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18) * Cambridge English Examination -B2 First or B2 First for schools or C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill. * OET at Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests * NZCEL - a) Expiring Level b) Current: a) Level 5 (Academic) or (Professional) b) Level 5 * Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42 * Language Cert - C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill * Trinity ISE ISE11 with no less than distinction in any band * Completion of all primary education and at least three years secondary education at schools with English as the language of instruction, or * Completion of five years of secondary education at schools with English as the language of instruction. Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate below 80 per cent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English must provide evidence that they: * Have gained NCEA Level 3 and met New Zealand University Entrance requirements, or * Have successfully completed a Bachelor's Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Master's Degree or Doctoral Degree, the language of instruction of which must be in English and which must be from a tertiary education provider from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States, or * Have achieved a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, CELTA, or * Have achieved the required score and with all scores achieved in a single test in one of the internationally recognised English Proficiency tests (specified above) within the preceding two years.
