Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of the MIT is to provide the IT sector with graduates with a high level of technical skill, and with a high level of intellectual rigour. Graduates will be capable of identifying problems in different contexts, of critically reviewing relevant IT literature, and of designing and executing a coherent research plan. Graduates will be able to critically analyse the results of research projects, and use these results to make and argue for recommendations solving the identified problem.
The Software Development specialist topic equips students with the skills to pursue the discipline for analysing requirements and design, implement, test and deploy a software application. The Information Systems specialist topic deals with the acquisition, storage, transformation and analysis of data and information within a business setting. The Networks and Security specialist topic deals with the technical issues involved in designing, implementing and administering computer networks.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this programme will be able to: * Demonstrate an advanced knowledge about and mastery of a specialised field of Information Technology; * Critically evaluate the existing literature, analyse and apply the results of original research in solving problems in information technology; * Independently develop a knowledge-based approach to plan, execute and complete an original piece of research, finding solutions to complex professional problems; * Effectively work in multi-cultural groups; and * Clearly present work-related information in written and/or verbal format. In addition, graduates of the MIT specialist topic in Software Development will be able to: * Critically analyse application requirements and apply relevant analytical and problem-solving skills to innovative software solutions; * Apply advanced database management technologies to support software applications and the software development process; * Design, develop and critically evaluate high quality software applications for various platforms such as desktop, web and mobile; and * Employ critical analytical skills concerning the implementation, evaluation and testing of advanced software development concepts. Graduates of the MIT specialist topic in Networks and Security will be able to: * Design, manage, maintain, administer and troubleshoot computer networks and network servers in complex business environments, guided by an in-depth knowledge of the related theoretical underpinnings; * Employ network infrastructure planning and design methods and techniques to align infrastructure design with complex organisational requirements; * Employ critical analytical skills concerning the implementation, evaluation and troubleshooting of advanced networking concepts; * Analyse common security concepts, implement secure networks and assess the performance of implemented secure methods; * Illustrate and employ an in-depth knowledge of the cellular network infrastructure design concepts and underlying theory; and * Differentiate and critically analyse the implementation of the current and emerging technologies in Cloud Computing and Networking architectures. Graduates of the MIT specialist topic in Information Systems will be able to: * Critically analyse the complexities of technology in order to make informed technological decisions to improve the productivity of a data-driven company; * Analyse both information technology and business information practices, in the context of their theoretical bases; * Implement analytics and compile data to derive valuable knowledge to make well informed business decisions; * Design the Information System structure based on the complex local and global influences on individual business organisations and society; and * Critically employ advanced technical skills in business data reporting, organisational development, strategic planning processes and analysis of data.
Education pathways
Students who successfully complete the MIT will be able to continue into Doctoral studies at New Zealand or overseas universities, subject to the entry regulations of those institutions. The courses offered within this qualification are suited to those who wish to expand their technical and research skills in the field of Information Technology.
Entry Requirements
A candidate for admission to this programme of study shall: (a) hold a Bachelor's degree (at least equivalent to New Zealand pass standard), in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field of study; or (b) hold a Graduate Diploma or equivalent in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field of study or (c) hold a Bachelor's with Honours degree (at least equivalent to New Zealand passstandard), in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field of study; or (d) hold a Postgraduate Diploma (level 8) in Information Technology, ComputerScience, or a related field of study; and (e) have an English level equivalent to Academic IELTS 6.5 (with no band less than 6) or (f) gain approval under Admission Regulation 1.3: Special Admission. An English language skill of at least Academic IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with no band less than 6.0, will be required for whom English is not their first language.

A candidate must complete the requirements for one (or more) of the following specialist topics to be awarded the Master of Information Technology: (a) The Master of Information Technology (Research) and Master of Information Technology (Applied) (any specialist topic) requires: (a) 90 credits of level 8 Information Technology courses, made up of the following: a. COMP801 Research Methods (15 credits) and b. ONE OF: i. COMP803 Internship (45 credits) ii. COMP804 Industrial Project (45 credits) and iii. 30 credits of specialist courses or i. COMP802 Research Project (30 credits) and ii. 45 credits of specialist courses And 90 credits of level 9 Information Technology courses, made up of one of the following options: The Master of Information Technology (Research) requires: i. COMP901 Information Technology Research Thesis (90 credits) orThe Master of Information Technology (Applied) requires:COMP902 Advanced Information Technology Specialised Project (45 credits)and ii. COMP903 Information Technology Applied Research Project (45 credits) (b) Specialist courses (15 credits each) for the Master of Information Technology, Software Development (Research) or Master of Information Technology, Software Development (Applied), are: a. SOFT806 Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment b. SOFT807 Cloud Application Development c. SOFT808 Software User Experience (c) Specialist courses (15 credits each) for Master of Information Technology, Networks and Security (Research) or Master of Information Technoology, Networks and Security (Applied), are: a. CONE809 Topics in Cloud Computing b. CONE810 Computer and Communication Network Security c. CONE811 Penetration Testing (d) Specialist courses (15 credits each) for the Master of Information Technology, Information Systems (Research) or Master of Information Technology, Information Systems (Applied), are: a. INFO812 Data Mining b. INFO813 Artificial Intelligence c. INFO814 Enterprise Cloud-based Systems
