Strategic Purpose Statement |
The Bachelor of Construction (Quantity Surveying) prepares students for work-readiness in technical and professional roles associated with the pricing and managing of construction projects, both nationally and internationally. The Site Management major provides career staircasing for those already working in construction with trade backgrounds into more senior site management, pricing, or project management roles. The Quantity Surveying major provides a career pathway into pricing, project management or consultant quantity surveying roles.
The Bachelor of Construction provides pathways into professional body membership such as the New Zealand Institute of Building (NZIOB) and, for quantity surveying graduates, into the New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NZIQS). |

1. Critically evaluate design proposals in terms of initial and whole-lifecycle costs, sustainability, and buildability implications.
2. Incorporate knowledge of mātauranga Māori and the Treaty of Waitangi into land development and construction-related decisions. 3. Financially administer construction contracts including preparing and managing contractual claims. 4. Apply principals of project management to plan and manage construction projects, including planning and teamwork and integrating knowledge areas such as scope, time, budget, risk, stakeholders, procurement, sustainability, resources, communication, quality, and health and safety. 5. Differentiate between potential dispute resolution processes and advise on specific dispute scenarios. 6. Critically evaluate procurement pathways and contractual arrangements and critique contracts in terms of clarity, obligations, and risk allocation and draft new and amend existing contract terms. 7. Critically evaluate construction processes through applying research skills with a view to improve performance in terms of time, quality, cost, sustainability, and client satisfaction. 8. Maintain professional competency and currency and have the ability to progress toward further post-graduate study and specialise in fields such as commercial management, project management, or construction law, including exploring new and emerging technologies. Additional Quantity Surveying outcomes: 9. Measure and estimate the costs of construction work and prepare quantity surveying related documentation such as schedules of quantities and tender proposals. 10. Prepare preliminary financial feasibility studies and detailed cost plans through analysing legislative, physical and financial constraints and cost and revenue streams discounted to net present value. Additional Site Management graduate outcomes: 11. Measure and estimate the costs of construction work and prepare site management-related documentation such as tender proposals, material orders, and labour forecasts. 12. Develop detailed plans for implementing onsite construction by evaluating legislative and physical constraints and efficiency and productivity factors. |

Entry Requirements
* If you are under 20, you must have NCEA Level 3 including 14 credits at Level 3 or above in three NZQA approved university entrance subjects, and Literacy: 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing, and Numeracy: 12 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of: specified achievement standards available through a range of subjects OR package of three numeracy unit standards (26623, 26626, 26627- all three required). Or (for those over 20 years): * evidence of academic equivalence of the above qualification: or * demonstrated evidence of ability to study successfully at degree level Additional Requirements - both majors * Those applicants who do not meet the academic entry criteria may still be given provisional entry to year one at the discretion of the Programme Leader. * International students must also demonstrate English language skills equivalent to an IELTS overall band score (Academic) of 6.0, with no band score less than 5.5, from one test taken in the preceding two years. * Future Skills' policy English Language Requirements for Those for whom English is an Additional Language also applies. |

All students will complete the following common components: Construction Technology: Small Buildings, 30 credits at level 5 Law and Contracts, 15 credits at level 5 Measurement, 15 credits at level 6 Estimating, 15 credits at level 5 Project Planning, 15 credits at level 6 Construction Technology: Medium and Large Buildings, 30 credits at level 6 Procurement and Tendering, 15 credits at level 7 Programming, 15 credits at level 6 People Management, 15 credits at level 6 Risk Management and Site Safety, 15 credits at level 6 Contract Administration, 15 credits at level 6 Claims Management, 15 credits at level 7 Dispute Resolution, 15 credits at level 6 Research Project, 30 credits at level 7 Quantity Surveying students will also complete the following: Advanced Measurement, 15 credits at level 6 Cost Planning, 15 credits at level 6 Tender Bid Project, 15 credits at level 7 Property Investment, 15 credits at level 6 Construction Business Management, 15 credits at level 6 Value Management and Building Information Modelling (BIM), 15 credits at level 7 or Construction Innovation 15 credits at level 7 Property Development, 15 credits at level 7 Site Management students will also complete the following: Site Logistics, 15 credits at level 6 Applied Construction Project, 30 credits at level 7 Site Innovation, 15 credits at level 7 Design Buildability, 15 credits at level 7 Advanced Site Planning, 15 credits at level 7.
