Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the plastics processing industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to work as an operator or processor under general supervision in a plastics processing operation.
This qualification is designed for people already working in the plastics processing industry or people wishing to complete a pre-trade qualification before entering the industry. The qualification includes optional strands in Blown Film Extrusion, Extrusion, Extrusion Blow Moulding, Injection Moulding, Injection Stretch Blow Moulding, Rotational Moulding, or Thermoforming. Each strand recognises the knowledge and skills required to work and operate plant and equipment safely within a specialised area within plastics processing. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Work safely as a member of a team in a plastics processing environment. - Apply knowledge of materials and production processes to produce plastics products. - Prepare for production and run and monitor machinery to produce plastic products. - Identify, resolve, and report on routine plastics processing problems. - Identify, resolve, and report on routine plastics processing problems. Graduates of the Blown Film Extrusion strand will also be able to: - Apply problem-solving techniques to troubleshoot and rectify blown film extrusion plastics processing production and quality issues. - Carry out routine service and maintenance requirements in accordance with blown film extrusion machinery specifications. Graduates of the Extrusion strand will also be able to: - Apply problem-solving techniques to troubleshoot and rectify extrusion plastics processing production and quality issues. - Carry out routine service and maintenance requirements in accordance with extrusion machinery specifications. Graduates of the Extrusion Blow Moulding strand will also be able to: - Apply problem-solving techniques to troubleshoot and rectify extrusion blow moulding plastics processing production and quality issues. - Carry out routine service and maintenance requirements in accordance with extrusion blow moulding machinery specifications. Graduates of the Injection Moulding strand will also be able to: - Apply problem-solving techniques to troubleshoot and rectify injection moulding plastics processing production and quality issues. - Carry out routine service and maintenance requirements in accordance with injection moulding machinery specifications. Graduates of the Injection Stretch Blow Moulding strand will also be able to: - Apply problem-solving techniques to troubleshoot and rectify injection stretch blow moulding plastics processing production and quality issues. - Carry out routine service and maintenance requirements in accordance with injection stretch blow moulding machinery specifications. Graduates of the Rotational Moulding strand will also be able to: - Apply problem-solving techniques to troubleshoot and rectify rotational moulding plastics processing production and quality issues. - Carry out routine service and maintenance requirements in accordance with rotational moulding machinery specifications. Graduates of the Thermoforming strand will also be able to: - Apply problem-solving techniques to troubleshoot and rectify thermoforming plastics processing production and quality issues. - Carry out routine service and maintenance requirements in accordance with thermoforming machinery specifications. |

This qualification may lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Plastics Engineering (Level 4) with strands in Blown Film Extrusion, Extrusion, Extrusion Blow Moulding, Injection Moulding, Injection Stretch Blow Moulding, Rotational Moulding [Ref: 4402], the New Zealand Certificate in Manufacturing (Level 4) with optional strand in Technical Support [Ref: 2731] or to higher-level generic process management qualifications.
