Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the plastics processing industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to manage, optimise, and maintain the processing of plastics in a plastics processing operation.
This qualification is designed for people already working in the plastics processing industry. Graduates will be able to work under broad guidance and may have some responsibility for the performance of others. The qualification includes strands in Blown Film Extrusion, Extrusion, Extrusion Blow Moulding, Injection Moulding, Injection Stretch Blow Moulding and Rotational Moulding. Each strand recognises the knowledge and skills required to operate and manage plant and equipment safely within a specialised area within plastics processing. |

Graduate profile |
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
- Quality assure the production of plastics. - Apply advanced knowledge of general processing machinery to manage plastics processing. - Apply advanced knowledge of plastics materials to manage plastics processing. - Troubleshoot and rectify faults with plant processing and equipment. - Apply advanced knowledge of plastics processing and machinery to contribute to continuous improvements in a plastics processing environment. Graduates of the Blown Film Extrusion strand will also be able to: - Apply advanced knowledge of blown film extrusion machinery to manage plastics processing. - Carry out plastics processing trials of new products or product changes for blown film extrusion. Graduates of the Extrusion strand will also be able to: - Apply advanced knowledge of extrusion machinery to manage plastics processing. - Carry out plastics processing trials of new products or product changes for extrusion. Graduates of the Extrusion Blow Moulding strand will also be able to: - Apply advanced knowledge of extrusion blow moulding machinery to manage plastics processing. - Carry out plastics processing trials of new products or product changes for extrusion blow moulding. Graduates of the Injection Moulding strand will also be able to: - Apply advanced knowledge of injection moulding to manage plastics processing. - Carry out plastics processing trials of new products or product changes for injection moulding. Graduates of the Injection Stretch Blow Moulding strand will also be able to: - Apply advanced knowledge of injection stretch blow moulding to manage plastics processing - Carry out plastics processing trials of new products or product changes for injection stretch blow moulding Graduates of the Rotational Moulding strand will also be able to: - Apply advanced knowledge of rotational moulding to manage plastics processing. - Carry out plastics processing trials of new products or product changes for rotational moulding. |

Education pathways |
This qualification may lead to the New Zealand Certificate in Plastics Engineering Technology (Level 5) [Ref: 2976] or to higher-level generic engineering qualifications.
Graduates wanting to specialise in workplace management may progress to the New Zealand Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4) [Ref: 2456]. |
