Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this micro-credential is to provide formal recognition and credentialisation of the skills and knowledge required to scale logs effectively, while operating safely and efficiently under limited supervision, as a log scaler within the forestry industry.

The micro-credential will cater to those already experienced in log scaling who wish to have their skills formally recognised, and also provide a training framework for those new to the log scaling industry in Aotearoa | New Zealand.
Graduate profile
On successful completion of this micro-credential, ākonga/learners will be able to identify and measure log attributes to ensure log specifications are met in a domestic and export log scaling operation, as a log scaler within the forestry industry. They will be self-aware, self-managing and have awareness of, and respect for their work environment.

Ākonga/learners will have knowledge of
- log scaling methods and procedures used for scaling domestic and export logs.
- attributes of domestic and export log grades.

Ākonga/learners will be skilled in:
- scaling logs for the domestic and export market.
- carrying out data collection for the purpose of auditing export logs.

Ākonga/learners will be able to progress towards supervision and operations management roles.

Entry Requirements
Entry requirements
* It is expected that ākonga/learners for this micro-credential will be employed in the forestry industry. The provider may be able to assist with placement for those not already in employment.
Literacy and numeracy
* Ākonga/learners require sufficient levels of literacy and numeracy to allow them to read and understand workplace documents, complete necessary calculations and complete assessments tasks.
* Providers will support ākonga/learners during delivery to ensure they have the level of literacy and numeracy required.

Language Proficiency:
* For ākonga/learners who do not have English as their first language, the level of English language skills required is equivalent to an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.5 in General or Academic, with no band score lower than 5. Further information on language proficiency requirements can be found in the Programme Approval, Recognition and Accreditation Rules, available from NZQA.

Content
On successful completion of this micro-credential ākonga/learners will be able to:
1. Describe log scaling methods and procedures used for scaling domestic and export logs.
2. Describe attributes of export and domestic log grades.
3. Scale logs for the domestic and export market.
4. Carry out data collection and auditing for export log scaling .

Akonga/learners will also be awarded the following unit standards:
17770 Demonstrate knowledge of log grades and log scaling methods (level 3, 5 credits)
6957 Scale logs using a domestic scaling method (level 4, 10 credits)
6958 Scale export logs using an export scaling method (level 4, 10 credits).
