Strategic Purpose Statement
Te Ōhanga Mataora: Bachelor of Health Sciences Māori Nursing programme provides tauira with a systematic and coherent introduction to a Nursing body of knowledge from a Health Science Māori perspective. The programme also provides opportunities for problem-solving and techniques of self-directed work and learning. Te Ōhanga Mataora: Bachelor of Health Sciences Māori Nursing aims to prepare graduates to become Registered Nurses Te Ōhanga Mataora means the cradle that nurtures the well face. Te Ōhanga Mataora was developed by Māori for Māori in order to affirm and develop the identity of tauira. Te Ōhanga Mataora is a valid approach to prepare Registered Nurses who are strong in their identity and able to honour and uphold the worldview and mana of
those they work with. Being Māori is a lived experience, and therefore, this programme values and embraces the different worldviews, beliefs and practices that tauira and Pouako possess, as well as whānau, hapū, iwi and others. This programme will prepare a Māori nursing workforce that is able to respond to the health needs of Māori and others adequately and appropriately, and the service delivery needs of Māori and non-Māori health providers. Te Ōhanga Mataora focuses on promoting wellness and well health in people, rather than predominantly responding to states of illness.
Graduate profile
Graduate profile outcomes (GPO) are critical to a programme as they describe the attributes tauira should have when they graduate. Graduates are instrumental in transforming and shaping the future of whānau, hapū and iwi as well as local, national, and global communities. To this end, the graduate profile is broad but also seeks to develop graduates with the attributes and capabilities they will need in order to have a positive and substantial impact on a complex and changing iwi, hapū, whanau, community, society, and world. Due to the nature of programmes offered by Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, each programme has its own approach to graduate profile outcomes. However, graduate profile outcomes generally aim to the following

Communicate the strategic aspirations of Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi for its graduates and the
value of education.
Create a framework which aligns and contextualizes curriculum development and assist curriculum
mapping processes.
Achieve the best possible outcomes for tauira.
Recognise the characteristics of a legislated Wānanga, particularly regarding āhuatanga Māori (Māori
tradition) according to tikanga Māori (Māori custom).
