Strategic Purpose Statement |
The purpose of this micro-credential is to provide formal recognition of the entry level skills and knowledge required to enter a career in the commercial fishing sector in Aotearoa New Zealand. The micro-credential provides a training framework for new or potential entrants into the commercial fishing industry, including seasonal workers, career changers and those not yet engaged in education, employment or training.

On successful completion of this micro-credential, learners/ākonga will be skilled in:
* Communication and Wellbeing * Safe work practices * Responsibilities of commercial fishing workers * Boat structure and equipment on a commercial fishing vessel * Protection of the marine environment The micro-credential will allow people who are new to the industry to have their skills and knowledge formally recognised and provide a training framework for them to pathway into further training in the industry. This micro-credential enhances the existing training framework by providing learners/ākonga with an introduction to the industry and to the commercial fishing career pathway they can follow. It will aid with both attraction and retention of workers for the commercial fishing industry. |

Entry Requirements |
It is expected that learners/ākonga will be engaged in a commercial fishing role that will allow the learning outcomes of the micro-credential to be met. The provider may be able to assist with placement for those not already in employment.
Learners/ākonga require sufficient levels of literacy and numeracy to allow them to read and understand workplace documents, complete necessary calculations and complete assessments tasks. Providers will support learners/ākonga during delivery to ensure they have the level of literacy and numeracy required. |

On successful completion learners/ākonga will be able to:
1. Participate as a crew member on a commercial fishing vessel 2. Describe the impact of adverse living conditions on a commercial fishing vessel and implement measures to address its effect on self and others. 3. Describe safe work practices on a commercial fishing vessel. 4. Describe responsibilities of a seafood industry worker under the Fisheries Act 1996. 5. Identify the boat structure, fittings, equipment and their function on a commercial fishing vessel. 6. Describe measures used to protect the marine environment during commercial fishing vessel operations. |
