Strategic Purpose Statement
The Master of Creative Arts Therapy (Clinical) programme is designed to extend and deepen a student's knowledge and skills by building on successful attainment of the Postgraduate Diploma in Creative Arts Therapy or like qualifications, courses and/or experience.
The MCAT(Clinical) provides the student with a systematic and coherent survey of current thinking and the opportunity to undertake self-directed study, research and scholarship in the area of the creative arts with|in Western psychotherapy and Indigenous health approaches.
The supervised research and placement, including report writing, treatment plans and phased supervision, will demonstrate intellectual independence, analytical rigour and sound communication, equipping graduates to work effectively both independently and as members of multi-disciplinary teams within the expanding opportunities being offered to creative arts therapists in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Creative arts therapists are benefitting from increasing recognition of the profession and are now able to register as ACC providers and obtain WINZ funding for clients and are engaging in an ever-widening range and complexity of employment opportunities. In addition, the expanding inclusion of more Indigenous/Māori/Pasifika approaches to health within the programme is opening opportunities for students in placement and graduates to engage with these communities in appropriate ways.
The low residency, blended delivery mode provides flexibility for students in the workforce.
Graduate profile
GPO1: Evaluate and synthesise creative Arts modalities and materials within emerging creative arts therapy praxis to support wellbeing of self and others.
GPO2: Reflexively engage with Research to inform professional development and application of appropriate arts-based research processes to contribute to professional practice.
GPO3: Analyse and assess creative arts Therapy theory and skills in a variety of therapeutic situations and cultural contexts.
GPO4: Interpret and appraise ethical and professional integrity across a range of Situated practice contexts, aligned with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and relevant standards of professional practice.
GPO5: Critique the practice and implications for creative arts therapy when A|R|T|S are contiguous.
Education pathways
Professional Doctorate or PhD.
Entry Requirements
Post Graduate Diploma in Creative Arts Therapy or equivalent level 8 qualification.
Or
An undergraduate degree qualification equivalent to Level 7 and evidence of relevant level 8 equivalent work experience.

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to provide satisfactory evidence of proficiency in the English language, such as a minimum score of 625 on the TOEFL test, If English is a second language, or 6.5 on the IELTS with no band score lower than 6.

The MCAT programme is specifically designed to extend and deepen knowledge and skills by building on attainment in the principal subjects of the creative arts and Western and Indigenous psychotherapy.

The programme is structured around four intertwined strands; Arts Practice, Research Capacities, Therapy Capacities, and Situated Practice, that collectively support praxis. Through carefully designed content, learning activities, and assessments that mutually reinforce the programme outcomes, students are provided with a comprehensive and systematic survey of current thinking in the field.
