Strategic Purpose Statement |
The strategic purpose of this degree is to provide students with a recognized applied computing technologies qualification in their chosen area of generalist or specialist knowledge. The courses balance practical and employable skills with academic knowledge and transferable skills. This degree is industry and community responsive in that it responds to current employment trends and sector needs.
Graduates will be technically knowledgeable, employable and skilled for computing or information technology related positions in their chosen field or prepared for further study at postgraduate level. They will be able to contribute to their profession and society in an ethical manner and will demonstrate employable transferable 21st Century Skills and attributes. |

Core knowledge and skills:
GPO 1: Apply critical thinking and structured problem-solving methodologies to design and develop effective and sustainable technological solutions across various domains. GPO 2: Apply ethical, legal, and social best practices within the IT industry while demonstrating professional integrity, and a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in IT practices in Aotearoa New Zealand. GPO 3: Manage the end-to-end development lifecycle of IT projects, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, and deployment, ensuring quality and sustainability. GPO 4: Investigate and leverage emerging technologies to develop forward-thinking and innovative IT solutions that address complex real-world challenges. Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics: GPO 5: Design and implement AI-driven solutions for business and social challenges, ensuring ethical AI use and compliance with data privacy laws. GPO 6: Apply data science and machine learning techniques to collect, process, and analyse datasets while ensuring ethical AI practices, data privacy, and transparency. Network Engineering and Security Graduates will be able to: GPO 7: Design, configure, and troubleshoot complex enterprise networks, ensuring robust security, performance, and compliance with industry standards. GPO 8: Plan, implement, and verify secure, scalable network solutions, integrating modern cybersecurity frameworks, wireless, and cloud-based architecture. Software and Web Development Graduates will be able to: GPO 9: Design, develop, and maintain software applications using contemporary frameworks and Agile methodologies. GPO 10: Critically evaluate, test, and optimise software and web applications for performance, scalability, and security within cloud-based and distributed environments Transferable Skills Pathway: GPO11: Employ skills and exhibit attributes within a chosen field or profession to attain goals in industry, communities, or in an academic context, or as an independent professional or practitioner. |

Education pathways |
Students successfully completing the Bachelor of Applied Computing Technologies will be equipped to undertake further study and progress to specialist postgraduate courses.
Students may apply for some cross credits (for example from a relevant certificate or diploma qualification) or RPL into the Bachelor of Applied Computing Technologies. The credit available will be determined on a case-by-case basis. |

Entry Requirements |
Applicants must demonstrate an ability to undertake degree level study, including appropriate knowledge and skills in the areas of written communication and mathematics, by having achieved:
University Entrance: NCEA Level 3 or above and 20 credits at NCEA Level 2 or above, including: NCEA Level 3; 14 credits each in three approved subjects and UE Literacy (NCEA Level 2 or above; 10 credits with 5 credits each in reading and writing) and UE Numeracy (NCEA Level 1 or above; 10 credits) OR A relevant qualification at Level 3 on the NZQF or above and the equivalent of UE Literacy and Numeracy OR New Zealand Certificate in Information Technology Essentials (Level 4) Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicant whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of their English language competency. International students English language requirements: IELTS 5.5 (with no band less than 5.0) or equivalent. Testing must have taken place with two years of qualification commencement. Applicants will be selected in order of successful application, on a first come, first served basis. An interview and portfolio are not required for entry into this programme. However, applicants may be asked to provide additional information to demonstrate their strengths, readiness, and potential for success in this programme. The CAO and Admissions Director, or their nominees, will determine if such information is necessary and will review it to assess the applicant's readiness and ensure appropriate support for their learning journey. This programme has been developed to meet the needs of learners that may have industry experience. Credit recognition and recognition of prior learning is based on formal or informal learning and is available in this programme, evidence must be provided on application, approval is at the discretion of the Head of School or Programme Leader. In accordance with Whitecliffe Policy on Credit Recognition (CR) Credit Transfer (CT) and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), credit shall be granted to any learner holding credit or demonstrated competency in component(s) of the programme. Credit recognition and transfer or recognition of prior learning is not available for any level 7 courses in this programme. The maximum number of credits available in the BACT is 240. |
