Strategic Purpose Statement |
Graduates of the programme will understand the historical development and evolution of human rights, and understand emerging paradigms and contemporary challenges in human rights at national, regional and international levels. Graduates will learn to utilise the human rights framework in the development and evaluation of policy. They will have skills that will equip them for academic work, policy analysis, advocacy and communication roles in a range of contexts and organisations. Graduates will have the knowledge, understanding and skills equipping them for employment in human rights advocacy and research, policy analysis, legal services, human rights education, non-governmental organisations, community development, conflict resolution, civil society organizations and international development organisations. Given that human rights have become the core language of a new politics of humanity, according to legal historian Samuel Moyn, it is anticipated that the programme will have applicability to a wide range of occupations.

The Master of Human Rights is a specialist programme of study that provides students with an advanced qualification in human rights research, advocacy and practice. It draws on a range of disciplines to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in human rights and cognate subjects. It is important to note that the programme has a focus on ensuring that graduates are able to see the human rights issues regardless of a specific topic area, acknowledging the universality and indivisibility of the human rights framework. Students must complete at least six prescribed papers and an applied research project which forms the capstone of the programme.
