Strategic Purpose Statement |
The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) provides students with a solid broad grounding in the fundamentals of information technology and its applications in the business environment, including systems development, requirements analysis and project management. Graduates will have specialist knowledge in at least one of the following four specialisations: Software Development, Networks and Security, and Information Systems.

Graduate profile |
Graduates will have an advanced knowledge in Information Technology (IT) including at least one of the three specialist fields. Software Development graduates will be able to: - Analyse, design and develop multi-tier software of international quality standards - Upgrade and maintain existing software implementations. Networks and Security graduates will be able to: - Design and implement robust and secure computer networks for wired and wireless systems - Administer and maintain networks. Information Systems graduates will be able to: - Make and deliver business advantage using information systems - Make strategic decisions based on effective implementation of information systems. Graduates will be able to continue to postgraduate studies in ICT. Graduates will be able to work as an IT professional in roles such as software programmer, software analyst, project manager, network administrator, networks support specialist, business analyst, IT manager, web developer, web analyst, or web service developer, depending on the specialisation undertaken.

Entry Requirements |
A candidate for admission to the first year of this programme of study shall: (a) (i) have a minimum of 14 NCEA credits in each of three subjects at Level 3, including a minimum of 9 credits in mathematics, and a minimum of 14 numeracy credits at Level 1 or higher, and a minimum of 8 literacy credits at Level 2 or higher; or (ii) have successfully undertaken tertiary study, including mathematics at a level equivalent to 9 credits at Level 3; or (iii) have successfully completed the requirements for a local or national Level 4 qualification in Computing; or (iv) hold an equivalent overseas qualification; and (b) have attained the age of 17 years; and (c) have an English level equivalent to IELTS (Academic) 6.0 (with no band less than 5.5) / TOEFL iBT 60 (with a writing score of 18) / PToE academic score of 50 with no band lower than 42 / NZCEL (Academic) (Level 4) / AIS Test of English Proficiency (TEP) 52/80 (with no band less than 12) (eligible students only); or (d) gain approval under Admission Regulation 1.3: Special Admission.

The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) is comprised of 23 courses. It consists of three categories of courses: compulsory courses, courses towards the specialisation, and elective courses, which are delivered in three stages over a period of three years. Each stage consists of courses at the same NZQA Level i.e. Stage 1: Level 5 courses, Stage 2: Level 6 courses, and Stage 3: Level 7 courses. Each course delivered in the Bachelor of Information Technology is of 15 credits (except for the project - 30 credits).
