Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is intended for those who wish to contribute to the reclaimation, preservation and revitalisation of te reo Māori me ōna tikanga to elevate the use of the language in a variety of iwi and hapū, educational, and other contexts.
The purpose of the Poutāhū Te Reo Māori is to provide whānau, hapū and iwi with exponents of te reo Māori who are able to work collaboratively to assist in to the onging development and implementation of te reo strategies.
Graduates will be able to assist whānau, hapū, iwi and other organisations at local and national level. They will be advanced researchers who are able to draw on hapū and iwi knowledge to assist and advise in the development of te reo Māori and other programmes.
Graduate profile
Graduates will be:
1. proficient in oral and written te reo Māori with a developing vocabulary of formal and informal language; ceremonial; classical and everyday; and able to use such language in a modern context.
2. able to assist in the development of language programmes for Iwi and Hapū and also for educational institutions.
3. able to contribute to the annual te reo Māori research seminar at Te Wānanga o Raukawa.
4. 'informed' in global strategies for indigenous language stabilisation, maintenance and retention.
5. will have developed techniques to explore the structure and meaning of te reo Māori in a number of contexts.
6. familiar with editing models in te reo Māori in a variety of styles.
7. able to develop a rigorous understanding of the role of kaumātua in Māori society, the marae as our principle home and serve as a repository of their own hapū and iwi knowledge.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be at least 17 years of age. Evidence of support from a hapū or iwi is to be provided, candidates must be able to satisfy the Director of Graduate Studies that they have the background which is appropiate for the successful undertaking of the programme.
