Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is intended for those who wish to contribute to Māori organisations and other organisations where iwi and hapū development is paramount; engage in collaborative strategic planning and decision making which is informed by kaupapa and tikanga.

The purpose of the programme is to provide whānau, hapū, iwi and associated organisations with graduates who are able to assist in the planning of iwi and hapū development, and actively give expression to kaupapa and the application of associated tikanga Māori.

Graduates will be bilingual researchers who have the capacity to be independent thinkers and practitioners of whakatupu mātauranga using kaupapa and tikanga to guide hapū and iwi local and national affairs. They will be strategic thinkers who explore the development of whānau, hapū and iwi with theoretical knowledge in Māori Laws and Philosophy that enhances the puna mātauranga of their own iwi and hapū.
Graduate profile
The Poutāhū Ahunga Tikanga graduate will be able to draw on tikanga tuku iho to assist with the establishment and maintenance of institutions (and institutional arrangements) that are driven and assessed by the principles and application of tikanga tuku iho.
Education pathways
This qualification will lead to year two of the Tāhuhu Ahunga Tikanga.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must be minimum age 17 years.Candidates must be able to satisfy the Director of Graduate studies that they have the background which is appropriate for the successful undertaking of graduate studies of the Post Graduate Diploma in Māori

Content
The first year of the degree explores a diverse range of Māori creation accounts and the kaupapa that emerge from Māori theories of existence. It also considers the creation of tikanga as the practical expression of these kaupapa, and scrutinizes particular examples of contemporary Māori practice to gauge the extent to which they have been influenced by Western values.

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
