Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is intended for those who wish to contribute to Māori organisations and other organisations in a management role using effective leadership skills and knowledge informed by kaupapa Māori and te reo Māori in order to contribute to the long-term survival of whānau, hapū and iwi.

The purpose of the Poutāhū Whakahaere is to provide whānau, hapū, iwi and other organisations with graduates who are capable of working collaboratively in contributing to the management and administration of hapū and iwi affairs.
Graduates will be able to work in both Māori organisations and other organisations in senior management leadership roles informed by kaupapa Māori. They will be able to assist in the planning, organising, leading and controlling of an organisation in order to contribute to the long-term survival of whānau, hapū and iwi.
Graduate profile
The graduate of the Poutāhū Whakahaere will:
* be a skilled researcher who can draw on mātauranga Māori to create and maintain a Māori look and feel in any organisation while maintaining currency with evolving management practice locally and globally
* have a developing capacity to apply tikanga Māori in the functional areas of planning, organising, leading and controlling in organisations
* be able to use and encourage the use of te reo Māori in organisations in ceremonial and other functions
* have the skills and knowledge to assist in the creation of resilient organisational cultures that have foundations in kaupapa Māori that in turn create a fair and just workplace
* be a critical thinker, capable of identifying objectives, roles, goals, and functions that lead to the creation and maintenance of organisational effectiveness
* able to analyse complex situations and contribute to change based on sound problem and decision analysis
* have a sound understanding of the legal environment as it applies to employment contracts, human rights and company law statutes and will be skilled at communicating the strategic intent of Māori organisations for market advantage
* be able to apply management practice informed by kaupapa to assist in the efficient operation of hapū and iwi governance structures
* develop a rigorous understanding of the role of kaumātua in Māori society, the marae as our principal home and serve as a holder of their own hapū and iwi knowledge
Education pathways
This qualification will lead to year two of the Tāhuhu Whakahaere.
Entry Requirements
Applicants must provide evidence of support for their studies from a hapū or iwi, and must have completed an undergraduate degree or diploma, or equivalent work or management experience indicating an ability to study at post-graduate level.

The Poutāhu Whakahaere is a one year postgraduate diploma made up of three major categories of subject matter; Whakahaere Studies, Iwi and Hapū Studies and Te Reo Māori Studies. Whakahaere studies including the use of kaupapa Māori planning frameworks and the application of kaupapa Māori to inform decision making, organisational design and relationship managment, communication, branding and marketing and the development of organisational culture in tikanga Māori organsations

Qualification Type

Level

Credits
