Strategic Purpose Statement |
A holder of the Telford Certificate in Equine (Level 3) will have sound basic equine and agriculture skills, with the flexibility to tackle a range of practical equine sector requirements. Practical skills will be supported by a sound knowledge foundation. Those who have achieved well within the qualification will have the clear indication that they are capable of higher levels of study in equine. The successful course participant will be able to work through a range of core activities in the equine sector, with a minimum of supervision and with an industry-acceptable level of productivity and competence. They will show initiative and a sense of responsibility, be competent and responsible with farm machinery and equipment,know the important and daily activities involved in stable practice and be able to work through these in an organised manner. They will be able to organise basic equine activities and identify possible factors and causes of problems with possible solutions, including feeding regimes, equine health matters, use of agricultural chemicals and fencing. They will know what needs to be communicated to the supervisor about aspects of the property such as, activities to be done, hazards and incidents and status of the animals.

Graduate profile |
Upon successful completion of the Telford Certificate in Equine (Level 3), students will: - develop their knowledge in equine health - nutrition and feeding; horse anatomy and physiology; keeping equine records; preventative measures for health maintenance; treatment of ill health in horses - develop knowledge of careers in the equine industry and the history and evolution of equestrian sport - gain an introduction to sport horse (riding or non-riding option), harness racing, track riding, trekking (riders only), and horse breeding - develop basic equine land skills - driving tractors, riding ATV's, using hand tools, maintaining and repairing equine fencing, maintaining water supplies, and basic knowledge of pasture management, soils, fertilizers, agrichemicals, weeds and grasses - develop basic skills and knowledge in stable practices - care of stabled horses; stable management; turning out a horse for competition; clipping a horse; identification and transport of horses; care of a horse in short term accommodation; gear and procedures used in the exercise of horses; identifying horse conformation and action; and knowledge of stable design

Education pathways |
Students may progress from this qualification into the Telford Certificate in Equine (Level 4)* and then the Telford Diploma in Horse Management (Level 5)* or one of the National Certificates in Equine (Level 3 or 4).
Learners may pathway to further study to achieve the following qualifications: * Telford Certificate in Equine (Level 4)* * National Certificate in Equine (Stable Procedures) (Level 3) (with strands in Harness Racing Stable Assistant, Sporthorse Stable Assistant, Thoroughbred Racing Stable Assistant and Thoroughbred Racing Track Rider) * National Certificate in Equine (Community Coach) (Level 3) * National Certificate in Equine (Grade 1 Coaching) (Level 4) * National Certificate in Equine (Level 4) (with strands in Sporthorse Stable Attendant, Harness Racing, Sporthorse Competitor, and Jockey) * National Certificate in Equine (Breeding) (Level 3) * National Certificate in Equine (Breeding) (Level 4) Alternatively, learners may wish to choose: * New Zealand Harness Horse Training Scheme - National Certificate in Equine (Level 4) * Massey University - Diploma in AgriScience (Equine Studies) |

Entry Requirements |
Applicants must - be at least 16 years of age; with the physical ability to manage the work; with evidence of riding capability for the riding option.
