Strategic Purpose Statement
There is a growing need for effective managers who possess both technical and conceptual
managerial skills. Such managers can define business objectives, allocate resources
effectively, motivate employees and solve problems as they arise. Graduates of the Bachelor
of Applied Management will be able to apply these skills in management roles in a variety of
industry and professional settings.
Graduate profile
Graduates will have demonstrated their ability to apply contemporary management practices
to a workplace situation and reflect on the efficacy during a significant internship in an
industry of their choice.
Graduates will have specialist knowledge and/or experience of the day-to-day operations of a
particular industry or sector.
Education pathways
Students successfully completing the Bachelor of Applied Management will be equipped to
undertake further study on Master of Business Administration (MBA) courses, and progress to
more specialist post-graduate courses that align to their interests and/or employment
experience.
Students wishing to specialise directly following graduation may enrol on graduate certificate
and diploma qualifications to achieve additional skills in specialist areas. Suitable qualifications
offered by the Open Polytechnic include:

Successful students may progress from a graduate diploma qualification to relevant specialist
post-graduate courses.
Students may staircase onto the Bachelor of Applied Management by completing a diploma
qualification.
Employment pathways
Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Management may apply their management skills to
people and/or processes. Graduates will be employed in positions that require technical skills
(knowledge and understanding of the mechanics of a specific industry), conceptual skills
(ability to think critically and see the relationships between various parts and the whole) and
planning/organisational skills (ability to design, plan, organise, and implement projects that
more efficiently utilise and further develop resources).
Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Management may find employment in a wide range of
industries at a middle or upper management level. For example, graduates may be employed
as; marketing managers, property managers, cost estimators, employee trainers, purchasing
managers, systems managers, facility managers, project managers, supervisors and
department heads. Employment fields may include both public and private sectors;
technology, hospitality, food management, health care, sports and event management,

Entry Requirements
Applicants under the age of 20 years must satisfy the academic requirements for university entrance, comprising Approved subjects - 42 credits at Level 3 or higher. Hold a diploma at Level 5 or Level 6 with a substantial work placement component. Arrangements for applicants over 20 and special considerations.

All compulsory courses (140 credits) must be completed or awarded through credit transfer
arrangements4.
Recommended elective courses are listed below. Elective courses may be selected from other
degree or diploma programmes offered by the Open Polytechnic with the approval from the
Programme Leader for the Bachelor of Applied Management. Elective courses must contribute
skills, knowledge and/or attributes relevant to the graduate profile. A list of relevant courses
available at the Open Polytechnic is included in appendix 1. Elective courses may be awarded
through credit transfer arrangements.

Level

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
